Tell those who have made verse a means

Tell the first one, they made drinking a means

By which they debate with al-Misbah:

Through which they gaze at the lantern

لا تعجبوا من راحة صفعت فتى

لا تعجبوا من راحة صفعت فتى

مثلى فمثلى مغرم بالراح

مثلى فمثلى مغرم بالراح

Do not be surprised at a palm that slapped a young man

Marvel not at the repose of a slap on a youth

Like me—for one like me is enamored of wine.

Like me, for the like of me is enamored of rest
