Pure in speech aloud and in whispers,

    He fulfilled his duty yesterday,

And wronged no one with a rightful claim

    Through diminution or shortchanging.

And among the people he is unknown,

    And on their tongues forgotten.

And in him is tenderness of heart

For the sufferings of his fellow humans.

So he envies no one blessed with good fortune,

And pities the brother of misery.

And for the deprived and the alms-seeker

There is a chair beside his food.

And he neither gossiped nor contemplated

    Any plotting or intrigue.

    He sleeps at night contented,

With little worry and few anxious thoughts.

And he wakes with no dust upon

His inner self, just as at evening.

So, O happiest of those who walk

    Upon the earth among humankind,

And you whom God has purified

    Of suspicion and defilement,

    Bestow honor upon my standing,

And grant me your sacred nearness.

    May your soul have

My soul included in its dreams,

So I may find some of what you find

    Of happiness and companionship.
