    Once there was a king of the crows,

    And in the great palm tree he had a canopied pavilion.

    Within it were a throne, a private chamber, and cradles

    For the royal young, heirs to the throne.

    One day Nudūr the servant came to him,

    Faithful and resolute at the gate.

    He said: O scion of righteous kings,

    You still love those who offer counsel.

    جازَت القَصرَ وَدَبَّت في الجُدور

    A weevil was circling the palace;

    It passed through the palace and crept into the roots.

    So send the crows to destroy it,

    Before we perish in its snares.

    The sultan laughed at these words,

    Then drew the good servant near and said:

    أَنا ذو المِنقارِ غَلّابُ الرِياح

    I am the lord of might, broad of wing;

    I am the beaked one, vanquisher of the winds.

    I do not look into these matters.

    I do not look beneath me, O Nudūr.

    Then, when year followed year,

    A quarrel arose between the wind and the palms.

    And behold, the palm tree’s trunk had become hollow,

    So uprooting it seemed easy to the wind.

    So it fell to the ground like a great hill,

    And the court hall fell, and the throne crashed down.

    Thus this dreadful calamity befell the sultan,

    And he called his dear servant, saying:

    O good Nudūr, help me by crying out!

    Do you not see what the winds have done to us?

    أَنا لا أَنظُرُ في هَذي الأُمور

    He said: O my lord, do not ask Nudūr;

    I do not look into these matters.
