O you who ask what freedom is,

You have asked about a splendid jewel

    That illuminates our pure souls.

Oh, how blessed life is with freedom!

    A pure, untainted delight,

It awakens zeal in our hearts,

It awakens in them a proud resolve,

    So they disdain ignoble stances,

    And cherish lofty stations.

    Honor—all honor—lies in freedom.

O you ignorant of the meanings of freedom,

O you who lack a sense of vibrant life,

You have grown blind to its splendid lights,

You have grown deaf to its plaintive melodies.

So you, in your foolish heedlessness,

    Are more like wild beasts.

You have not reached the inviting watering places,

You have not known pleasant delights.

    لذتّك النقائصُ البذية

    Your watering place is far-off humiliation;

Your pleasure is in foul vices.

You live as a slave whose lot is wretched,

Downtrodden, while all creation loathes you.

O you who rob our souls of freedom,

O you who ride the mounts of sin,

God gave you to us as a gift,

An instinct innate in His creation.

We shall surely offer, as a sacrifice in its defense,

    Life, precious possessions, and offspring.
