O you of shapely forms, whose lofty spearpoints charged,

For God's sake, spare souls whose precious ones have perished.

Secure safety for them, if it could help them,

And restore them generously, if it could do them good.

    ما كانَ مِن عَبَثِ الأَحداقِ يَكفيها

    And see what your eyes have done to them;

The eyes' mere playful teasing would have sufficed them.

Some of our eyes ventured forth; then we were met

On al-Jazira by a flock of its lovely maidens.

They sprang from lairs only into other lairs,

Within our breasts, whose arching ribs embraced them.

At dusk they appeared to us, urging spears against us,

Waved in coquetry, leveled in haughty pride.

And honed eyes whose sword-belts were frail,

Their blades drunken, their keen edges dark with kohl.

Ours are the snares we cast, with which we hunt,

And we never thought the plain's gazelles would cast them.

They set them for you, made of lashes and pupils,

Till you returned with a soul whose ransomer was hard to find.

From every radiant beauty, in whose brightness smiled

Her bosom, revealing pearl-like gleams from her mouth.

A sun of beauty, through whom daylight is prolonged,

As though Joshua, enchanted, were keeping pace with her.

She walked across the bridge, a gazelle when she turned

Toward the onlookers, and a bān-tree when she swayed.

As though all its beauties were her rival co-wives,

In her self-admiration, and all its sides her mirrors.

I crossed her path, my conscience one of her guardians,

Shrinking from my glances along her paths.

I refrain from gazing at what adjoins her jewels,

And at what lies close to her delicate garments.

She said, “Perhaps the Nile's man of letters will embarrass us.”

I said, “Does their beholder embarrass the moons?”

    ما كُنتُ أَعلَمُ أَنَّ الريمَ يَرويها

    Between you and me are verses I have sung aloud;

I never knew the gazelle was reciting them.

And speech, whether chaste or offensive in its effects,

Is an echo of the inner self and manners, reflecting them.
