O palace, will you honor our covenant

and remain faithful, if the faithful are scarce among people?

    واختزنها في الزوايا والحنِى

    Do not lose the secrets of love in your keeping;

and store them in the corners and arched niches.

And set a seal upon its belongings:

love's possessions are indeed a splendid treasure.

    Memories—whenever you stir them,

fragrant musk wafts from your walls.

Kisses that none but love has counted:

they were sweet at dawn and sweetened the evening.

The body senses their whisper, as when

ears of grain flutter or jewelry chimes.

And an embrace like eyelids clasped together,

and a twig twined around a supple, tender branch.

O palace, has love's wedding ended,

and has dawn completely folded away the night of intimacy?

And in the nights of old, there did not endure

the wedding's joy, nor did the clamor remain.
