ياO رَبِّmy Lord ماwhat حُكمُكَYour judgment ماذاwhat تَرىYou think
فيabout ذَلِكَthat الحُلمِthe dream العَريضِbroad الطَويلlong
O my Lord, what is Your judgment; what do You think
O Lord, what is your judgement, what do you see
of that broad, long dream?
In that vast, long dream
قَدindeed قامَrose غَليومٌGuillaume خَطيباًas an orator فَماand not
أَعطاكَgave You مِنof مُلكِكَYour kingdom إِلّاexcept القَليلa little
Guillaume has risen to speak, and has not
William rose up as an orator, yet he
given You more than a little of Your kingdom.
Gave you little of your kingdom
شَيَّدَbuilt فيat جَنبِكَYour side مُلكاًa kingdom لَهُfor himself
مُلكُكَYour kingdom إِنif قيسَis compared إِلَيهِto it الضَئيلpaltry
He has built himself a kingdom beside You;
He built beside you a kingdom of his own
Your kingdom, if compared with it, is paltry.
If compared to it, yours seems insignificant
قَدindeed وَرَّثَbequeathed العالَمَthe world حَيّاًwhile alive فَماand not

He has bequeathed the world while still alive, and has not
He bequeathed the world alive, yet he
left out a single mountain pass or path.
Left no crevice or path
فَالنِصفُso half لِلجِرمانِfor the Germans فيin زَعمِهِhis claim
وَالنِصفُand half لِلرومانِfor the Romans فيماin what يَقولhe says
So half is for the Germans, as he claims,
In his view, half is for the Germans
and half for the Romans, according to what he says.
And half for the Romans, so he claims
ياO رَبِّmy Lord قُلsay سَيفُكَYour sword أَمor سَيفُهُhis sword
أَيُّهُماwhich of the two ياO رَبِّmy Lord ماضٍsharp ثَقيلheavy
O my Lord, say: Your sword or his—
O Lord, say, is it your sword or his
which of the two, O my Lord, is sharp and heavy?
That, O Lord, is the heavier, more decisive one
إِنif صَدَقَتcome true ياO رَبِّmy Lord أَحلامُهُhis dreams
فَإِنَّthen indeed خَطبَthe plight المُسلِمينَthe Muslims الجَليلgrave
If, O my Lord, his dreams come true,
If, O Lord, his dreams prove true
then the Muslims' plight is indeed grave.
Then the affairs of Muslims are in jeopardy
لاnot نَحنُwe جِرمانُGermans لَناfor us حِصَّةٌa share
وَلاnor بِرومانَRomans فَنُعطىso we might be given فَتيلa date-stone fiber
We are not Germans, to have a share,
We are not Germans to get a share
nor Romans, to be given even a thread.
Nor are we Romans to be given a wick
ياO رَبِّmy Lord لاdo not تَنسَforget رَعاياكَYour subjects فيon

O my Lord, do not forget Your subjects on
O Lord, do not forget your subjects on
a day when Your subjects are the humiliated side.
A day your subjects are the humiliated group
جِنايَةُthe crime الجَهلِignorance عَلىagainst أَهلِهِits people

قَديمَةٌage-old وَالجَهلُand ignorance بِئسَwretched is الدَليلthe guide
The crime of ignorance against its own people
The crime of ignorance upon its people
is age-old, and ignorance is a wretched guide.
Is old, and ignorance is an evil guide
ياOh لَيتَwould that لَمdid not نَمدُدwe stretch out بِشَرٍّwith evil يَداًa hand

Oh, would that we had never stretched out a hand to do harm,
If only we did not extend a hand to evil
and would that peace's sheltering shade endured.
And if only the shade of peace remained soothing
جَنىdid harm عَلَيناto us عُصبَةٌa band جازَفواthey acted recklessly
فَحَسبُناso sufficient for us اللَهُGod وَنِعمَand excellent is الوَكيلthe guardian
A band that acted recklessly has wronged us;
A gang took risks upon us
so God is sufficient for us, and what an excellent guardian He is!
God suffices us, an excellent Trustee
