O Mans, how long will you stray from the path?
When will you cease leading astray,
You have been beguiled, and left minds bewildered about you.
Confusing minds, bewildering all?
أبحثyou permitted (probable intended reading: أبحت) البرازdueling بهذىin this البلادland
وكانand was البرازdueling بهاin it مستحيلاimpossible
You have permitted dueling in this land,
I seek virtue in this land,
Though dueling there had been impossible.
Yet virtue here was hopeless.

وتدعوand you invite الفضاليal-Fadali إليهto it فضولاout of meddlesomeness
And you are about to make it a habit,
And you almost made it a habit,
And invite al-Fadali to it out of meddlesomeness.
Calling the virtuous to vice, to folly.

ولاnor هِبتyou feared ربthe master of القوافيrhymes خليلاKhalil
For yesterday you did not fear the master of al-Liwa,
Yet yesterday you feared not the banner's Lord,
Nor did you fear Khalil, the master of rhymes.
Nor stood in awe of the Master of verse.

Is it for some fleeting event,
With the slightest reproach that you beat the drums,
Remedied by the slightest rebuke, you beat the drums,

Summon witnesses to the gathering,
And go a mile from Cairo with your opponent,
Exiling your opponent miles from Egypt,

And stab Mutran in his nose?
Stabbing a bishop in the nose-
And Mutran's nose is no small thing!
Yet what is a bishop's nose, so very little?

You stabbed the high-bridged, unyielding, disdainful nose,
You stabbed that proud, dignified, haughty nose,
The proud, thick, deep-rooted, long one.
That thick, ancient, elongated nose.

You stabbed the press in its nose;
You stabbed the press in its nose,
You stabbed the discerning, noble colleague.
You stabbed that chaste, decent, noble pavement.

You stabbed al-Jawa'ib in the person of its master,
You stabbed its pleats in their Lord,
And did not fear Jurji or Michel on its account.
Nor feared thereby George or Michel.

My friend Mutran, may you find healing,
My friend, the bishop found healing,
And never again taste a duel with Mans.
Nor did he thereafter taste Menas' sorrows.

For you brandish the polished reed pen,
You shake the naked blade,
And Mans brandishes the polished sword.
While Menas shakes the naked steel.

You lead the way in Baalbek,
And Mans is foremost among the people of Lille.
While Menas leads the night patrol.

And what have you to do with the sword at a duel?
With the sword you duel his letters and chapters,
So duel with his letters and articles.

And teach him how the reed pen attacks,
Shaming the gazelle to rage.
So that sword-blades are ashamed to attack in its presence.

Fair consolation and fair patience!
Take gracious consolation, and bear with gracious patience.

My eye wept blood for your wounds,
And that blood it was their duty to pour.
And its blood was ordained to flow.

So if you wish, take its light as an ointment,
Take their tears, for healing, as a wick.
And take its lashes as a wick for healing.
