ياO دِنشِوايَDinshaway عَلىupon رُباكِyour hills سَلامُpeace
ذَهَبَتhave gone بِأُنسِwith the cheer of رُبوعِكِyour dwellings الأَيّامُthe days
O Dinshaway, peace be upon your hills.
O Denshawai, peace be upon your land,
The days have carried away the cheer of your dwellings.
The days of your pleasant dwellings have passed.
شُهَداءُmartyrs of حُكمِكِyour verdict فيin البِلادِthe land تَفَرَّقواhave dispersed
هَيهاتَfar beyond hope لِلشَملِfor the company الشَتيتِscattered نِظامُreunion
The martyrs of your verdict are scattered across the land.
Witnesses of your rule scattered in the country,
How remote is reunion for the scattered company!
Alas, the scattered will never reunite.
مَرَّتhave passed عَلَيهِمover them فيin اللُحودِthe graves أَهِلَّةٌcrescent moons
وَمَضىand has passed عَلَيهِمover them فيin القُيودِthe chains العامُthe year
Crescent moons have passed over them in their graves,
New moons passed over them in shackles,
And the year has passed over them in chains.
And a year went by with them in chains.
كَيفَhow الأَرامِلُthe widows فيكِin you بَعدَafter رِجالِهاtheir husbands
وَبِأَيِّand in what حالٍcondition أَصبَحَhave become الأَيتامُthe orphans
How fare the widows in your midst after losing their husbands?
How are the widows after their husbands?
And in what state are the orphans now?
And in what state are the orphans now?
عِشرونَtwenty بَيتاًhomes أَقفَرَتbecame deserted وَاِنتابَهاand overtook them
بَعدَafter البَشاشَةِcheerfulness وَحشَةٌloneliness وَظَلامُand darkness
Twenty homes lie deserted, and have been overtaken,
Twenty homes were emptied and inhabited
After gladness, by loneliness and darkness.
By gloom and darkness after cheerfulness.
ياO لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge فيin البُروجِthe towers حَمائِمٌdoves
أَمor فيin البُروجِthe towers مَنِيَّةٌdeath وَحِمامُand death
Would that I knew: are there doves in the towers,
I wonder, are there doves in the constellations?
Or death and doom in the towers?
Or is there perdition and pigeons in the constellations?
نَيرونُNero لَوif أَدرَكتَyou had lived to see عَهدَthe era of كَرومِرٍCromer
لَعَرَفتَyou would have known كَيفَhow تُنَفَّذُare carried out الأَحكامُthe sentences
Nero, had you lived to see Cromer's era,
Nero, had you lived in Cromer's days,
You would have learned how sentences are carried out.
You would have known how laws are executed.
نوحيlament! حَمائِمَdoves of دِنشِوايَDinshaway وَرَوِّعيand terrify!
شَعباًa people بِواديin the valley of النيلِthe Nile لَيسَdoes not يَنامُsleep
Lament, doves of Dinshaway, and terrify
Inspire, O doves of Denshawai, a people
A people in the Nile Valley that does not sleep.
In the Nile Valley who never sleep.
إِنif نامَتِsleep الأَحياءُthe living حالَتintervened بَينَهُbetween it
سَحراًbefore dawn وَبَينَand between فِراشِهِits bed الأَحلامُdreams
If the living sleep, it is kept apart
If the living slept, dreams would come between them
From its bed before dawn by dreams.
And their bed at night.
مُتَوَجِّعٌin pain يَتَمَثَّلُpictures اليَومَthe day الَّذيwhich
ضَجَّتcried out لِشِدَّةِat the intensity of هَولِهِits terror الأَقدامُthe feet
In pain, it pictures the day when
Suffering, remembering the day when
Feet cried out at the intensity of its terror.
Feet shook from the horror.
السوطُthe whip يَعمَلُis at work وَالمَشانِقُand the gallows أَربَعٌfour
مُتَوَحِّداتٌstanding alone وَالجُنودُand the soldiers قِيامُstanding
The whip is at work, and the gallows are four,
The whip works and the gallows are four,
Each standing alone, while the soldiers stand.
United, and the soldiers standing.
وَالمُستَشارُand the adviser إِلىtoward الفَظائِعِthe atrocities ناظِرٌlooking
تَدمىbleed جُلودٌskins حَولَهُaround him وَعِظامُand bones
And the adviser looks upon the atrocities;
The advisor is watching the atrocities,
Skins and bones bleed around him.
Bones and skins bleed around him.
فيin كُلِّevery ناحِيَةٍquarter وَكُلِّand every مَحَلَّةٍneighborhood
حَزعاًin anguish (apparently جزعاً) مِنَof المَلَأِthe multitude الأَسيَفِgrief-stricken زِحامُa throng
In every quarter and every neighborhood
In every region and every neighborhood,
Is a throng of grief-stricken people in anguish.
A crowd terrified of the naked swords.
وَعَلىand on وُجوهِthe faces of الثاكِلينَthe bereaved men كَآبَةٌgrief
وَعَلىand on وُجوهِthe faces of الثاكِلاتِthe bereaved women رُغامُdust
And on the faces of bereaved men lies grief,
On the faces of the bereaved, gloom,
And on the faces of bereaved women, dust.
And on the faces of the bereaved women, dust.
