    O blissful one, whose eyelids sleep,

    Your love-worn one's sorrows never rest.

    إِن لَم تُعِنهُ فَمَن يُعينُهُ

    He has borne love's full burden for you;

    If you do not help him, who will help him?

    أَودَعتَ سِرَّكَ مَن يَصونُهُ

    Return with kindness, or do not return;

    You have entrusted your secret to one who guards it.

    Between me and you, in love,

    is a bond whose strength will unite us.

    A young gazelle: sorcerers are censured,

    and their magic too, save his eyelids.

    يَفديهِ ما مَلَكَت يَمينُهُ

    The soul belongs to his right hand;

    What his right hand owns would ransom him.

    The bān tree is but his stature,

    if its branches could enthrall a heart.

    And every peerless pearl is adorned

    by his mouth, though you think it adorns him.

    كانَ الصَباحَ لَها جَبينُهُ

    Life is but a night;

    his brow was its morning.

    Passion spent the night requiting us,

    as we, that night, requited it.

    Between the watcher and us

    lies a valley whose rugged terrain keeps him away.

    We speak ill of him and say: May neither

    the watcher nor his eyes remain!
