Neither sleeplessness nor sleep brings me near him.
Neither the land nor the moon brings me near to you,
A phantom visits by his grace whenever he travels by night.
An apparition that visits me wherever you travel.

He took the darkness, its sky, and its stars
Darkness takes its veil, its sky and its stars
As paths to your eyelids; he would not settle for the earth.
As paths to your eyelids though the land was not pleased.

And came to you in full bliss; you would think him
And he came to you, his bliss abundant,
A purified angel, disclosed by the heavens.
An angel with whom the sky is purified.

Darkness knew of his descent, and toward him moved
Darkness knew of his descent, so its eyelids
Its lashes, receiving him as he descended.
Flowed down taking him slipping down.

And barred the breezes from going or coming,
And the breezes took care neither to wander nor to come
In caution and fear that he might be startled and frightened.
Fearing he would be startled and terrified.

And you fell asleep drawing near in your imagination
Between your eyelids, your lashes, and sleep.
A place for him between your eyelids and your flowing hair.

So you made him happy like ecstasy yearning
Taking whatever form you wished him to take.
Imagining whatever you wanted him to imagine.

You sweep the watchers aside for him, triumphant in love,
The firmaments will fold for him love triumphant
And trample the slanderers' tongues, victorious.
And trample the tongues of slanderers victoriously.

Its days would not have forgiven what has passed.

It spent the night yearning and its blackness
A shrine, lit by the image of beauty.
Was adorned with the statue of Beauty luminous.

Through you presenting the wishes and postponing them.

On a night whose crescent had newly entered existence,
On a night when its crescent was born into existence
Its stars drew near to teach him night travel,
Its planets approached teaching it the path.

And showed him full moons' tracks for him to follow,
Showing it the tracks of full moons to follow
And birth deemed him entitled to take the lead.
And the birth deemed it should lead.

I whispered to my beloved, who whispered to me that night,
I spoke privately to the one I love and she spoke to me
Among gardens and the waters of Switzerland.
Between the gardens and the water of Switzerland.

Where the mountains, small and large,
Are of every kind, white against the sky and green.
Are all white and green in the sky.

Clouds made their homes there, and the mountains appeared
The clouds take them as houses, so they shone
Glowing in their bulk, gray-haired at their summits.
Dotted with celestial bodies and speckles.

And the lofty rock stood like a seated figure,
And the bare rock stands tall resembling one sitting
Towering, its sides exposed, threatening.
With revealed sides threatening.

Among the planets and the clouds you see it has
An ear of deaf stone and a camel's lip.
An ear of deaf stone and an axe.

And which side of the slope have you come upon
You find a staircase, surging in circles.
You will find it a winding staircase rounding.

The sky scattered over it the necklace of its stars,
The sky sprinkled its necklace of stars upon it
And its chrysolite appeared jeweled with them.
So its chrysolite appeared jeweled by them.

And the white houses seemed to be
Birds' nests, or an army encamped.
Dens of birds or a camp that lodged.

And the star sends its light to the waters
While electricity lights the folds of the earth.
While electricity illuminates the land.

The moth fell in love with it and circled in battalions,
The moth fluttered around it and the clouds
Mimicking drifting clouds around it.
Circling narrated its surroundings marching on.

It was created for his mercy, so his fire
Coolness, while lovers' fire blazed.
Became cool while the lovers' fires rage.

Flows through them and around the villages,
And through them running around the villages.

Directing, ascending, slowing, hastening
Hurrying, flowing in chains, stumbling.
Flowing, dripping, stumbling.

And the land, wherever you turn, is a bridge and a crossing,
And the land is a bridge where you turned and a crossing
Both linking a bridge and a crossing in the waters.
Connecting a bridge in the waters and a crossing.

While the boat in the houses' shade slips away
Traverse streams and rivers toward them.
The streams turn towards it and the rivers.

Until, when the throng fell quiet in its night,
Until when the night was still in its darkness
I tugged at my night's robe, bewildered.
I drew its dress to me confused.

And I went out from among the bridges, hoping
And I went out from among the bridges perhaps
To welcome the beloved fragrance as it drifted by night.
I would meet the beloved caravan if it travelled.

I take refuge among the trees, and they stir me,
I took refuge in the trees and they swayed me
While the birds have settled in them in sleep.
While the birds in them were reassured.

And the gleaming water stirs something within me,
And the water swayed me in its glimmer
So I lean to gaze into it, hoping to see.
So I leaned looking in it hoping to see.

And there the sky grew resplendent, and it happened that
And there the sky grew restless and it happened
I perceived a light—how perfect and dazzling!
That I sensed a light not fully realized or brighter.

So I traveled through its glitter, and behold:
So I walked in its splendors and lo
A full moon, with stars swaying gracefully beside it.
A moon the planets orbit caravanning.

A dream—Providence lent me its ear
A dream the Providence lent me hearing it
Within it; before I had finished, it was interpreted.
In it so I did not complete it before it was interpreted.

Then I saw my chosen beloved plainly, and began
So I saw my beloved clearly and I began
To forget waking life, my wishes answering in person.
To forget the awakening while the dreams clung on.

And you gestured, 'A meeting?' It was revealed: 'Tomorrow,
And you hinted "Shall we meet?" and inspired that tomorrow
On a white mountain among Switzerland's mountains.'
In the hillock white from the mountains of Switzerland,

And when it falls red in that rubble,

Her rising from it is fuller in meaning,
Then its sunrise is the most meaningful of signs
And her setting clearer and more perfect to behold.
And its sunset the clearest and most perfect view.

There she appears to existence a newborn,
You will appear there born unto existence
In whom the world rejoices and the earth delights.
The world celebrates it and the ground rejoices.

And lights the reaches of space with a radiant brow
And it lights the horizons with an innocence
That appears on the mountain's head, a shining crown.
That shone at the mountain top a flowering crown.

She rose, half a tambourine; scarcely had it appeared
It rose so it was half a flying carpet not appearing
Before it towered, showing as a larger tambourine,
Until it reached the height a greater flying carpet.

Rising above the worlds, independent and growing,
Rising above the worlds independent growing
Unreachable in its station, impossible to tap.
Obstinate in its place that it not be chipped.

The horizons flowed with it—but as gold,
The horizons swooned for it but it stayed erect
And forms were covered—but with jewels.
And the specters were veiled but it a gem.

It trembled, and the world trembled with it,
And it shook so the world for it shook
And shone, revealing existence filled with light.
And it lit so existence was illuminated.

Until, when ascent reached its perfection,
Until when the rising reached its perfection
She heeded the call of waning, falling backward.
It allowed the claimant of decline to fall steep.
فَدَنَتso she drew near لِناظِرِهاto her beholder وَدانَand yielded عَنانُهاher reins

She drew near her beholder, and her reins yielded,
It approached its viewer and its reigns slackened
And he who deemed her great now deemed her small.
And the arrogant diminished and grew small.

The white of everything around her turned yellow,
And all the whiteness around it yellowed
And her veil turned red, having been yellow.
And its expanse reddened and became yellow.

The mountain rose toward her to take her, after she
And the hillock reached towards it as it
Had made its heights a red ribbon.
Made its heights a red sash.

She touched it, and its flanks blazed with her,
It touched it so its sides caught fire
And its lofty peaks appeared to bear a brazier.
And its rubble appeared carrying embers.
فَكَأَنَّماas though مَدَّتshe spread بِهِover it نيرانَهاher flames

As though she had spread her fires upon it
As if it extended its fires to hunt
As a snare to catch the departing day.
The retreating daylight as a partner.
حَرَقَتهُshe burned it وَاِحتَرَقَتand burned بِهِwith it فَتَوَلَّياthen both departed

She burned it, and burned with it; both departed,
It burned it and burned with it so they turned away
And darkness came to their ruins and encamped.
And their shadows were cloaked by darkness camped.

Her sunrise is beloved hope to whoever sees,
So its sunrise is the beloved hope for one who saw
And her sunset the hated end to whoever knows.
And its sunset the hated end for one who knew.

ماnot كانَwas بَينَهُماbetween them الصَفاءُserenity لِيَعمُراto endure
Two mighty events brought destruction upon serenity;
Two preachers stood at the parapet over al-Safa
The serenity between them was never to endure.
There was no purity between them to last.
تَتَغَيَّرُchange الأَشياءُthings مَهماwhenever عاوَداthe two return
وَاللَهُand God عَزَّmajestic وَجَلَّand exalted لَنnever يَتَغَيَّراwill change
Things change whenever the two return,
Things change no matter how much they repeat
And God, majestic and exalted, will never change.
While God Almighty does not change.

Our days were spent beneath Salève and above it,
Our rivers are under the bridge, above it
Along its sides and between the summits,
And beside it, and between the rubble.

On foot, mounted, and gliding on
On foot, riding, and sliding on a wheel
Wheels there, electrically driven,
There, electrically travelling.

In a docile carriage, along which flowed
In a friendly boat the iron bars flowed
Iron rails, winding and descending.
Winding and descending.

It glides slowly between the rocks,
It flows leisurely between the rocks
And speeds, swaying, between the two chasms.
And lightens between the two valleys rushing.

And when it climbs by electricity toward a summit,
And when empowered by electricity towards
Inaccessible, it strains to embrace and scale it.
A lofty summit it desires to embrace over a wall.

When we alighted from it on the mother of peaks,
When we descended from it into the mother of rubble
We stood on Salève's summit, that we two might look.
We stood on the bridge’s branch to see.

A land where countless sights surge,
A land where sights undulate, a perfect book
And worlds—what an excellent book for whoever reads!
For whoever reads it well and understands.

And villages formed a halo around the cities,
And villages that form halos around the cities
And cities adorned the necks of villages.
And cities that adorned the steeds of villages.

And farms, wonders to those who look,
And fields that are marvels for onlookers
With which the landscape wore green embroidery.
The sky dressed them in a green brocade.

And pools of water—how limpid and abundant!
And the water a copious, gentle betrayal
And streams—silver itself, set flowing.
And streams that are the ingots that flowed.

They filled the mouths of the plains with ingots,
So they filled the mouths of plains with bars
And filled the faces of steadfast mountains with jewels.
And the waterways of the firmly rooted with gems.

Distance has made existence small for us—oh,
Distance has shrunk existence for us so how beautiful
God, how lovely existence is in miniature!
Is existence shrunk for us!
