May the mighty steeds ransom you, O Max,

and may the expert physicians ransom the one you serve.

It is as though, when you fight, Antar were astride you,

and you were beneath Ibn Sina when you are at peace.

You will be rewarded with statues beyond compare,

when a day comes on which beasts are rewarded.

For you are a sun, and the steeds are stars,

and you are a dinar, while they are dirhams.

A statue is erected in Parliament's square,

and another stands for you in Al-Liwa's bar.

And Al-Ahram will secure only a third statue,

over which David's psalms sound sweetly.

And how often you claim Sudan, O Max, in jest,

though you are neither blackened nor dark-hued.

And what the eye sees in you is nothing suspect,

but graying hastened by great ordeals.

As though you were the Turks' horses, whose backs have grayed,

and whose forelocks have grayed, and whose legs have grayed.

Ah, how many harrowing days you have witnessed,

whose battles and epic struggles are renowned!
