May God water a resting place at Kafr al-Ibadi,
Allah has watered with unbelief the resting place of the Ibadi,
Exhaling camphor wafted from Paradise.
Who diffused camphor of eternity flowing freely.

Burdayn's soil grows fragrant from the waft of his perfume,
The soil of Burdain smells sweet because of his perfume's breath,
As though Burdayn's soil had touched precious perfumes.
As if the soil of Burdain was touched by the bracelets.

Oh, what a sheath you are, of stone slabs and rock,
O you who were wrapped in a scabbard of steel plates and silk,
Holding a Yemeni sword with a polished edge.
Which contained the sword, polished and Yemeni.

And in calamities we had drawn its keen edge,
And we took refuge during tribulations in his absence,
And it was never found timid, nor did we find it blunt.
Yet he was not frightened, nor were we frightened.

Whenever it quivered in defense of right, guarding its pools,
Whenever truth shakes, he protects its borders,
The people's falsehood drew back from them, thirsty.
While the falsehood of the people withdraws, defeated.

Death's hand enfolded him; no rank can shield
A hand of death grasped him, not status protecting him
When it strikes one day, nor can wealth ransom him.
When it seized one day, nor wealth ransoming him.

And the dried, old wood comes alive in old age through him

And some deaths lay honey in the soil,
And some deaths bring down honey in the earth
And bring firmly rooted mountains down into the dust.
While mountains, the firm ones, crash into the soil.

They say, 'He elegizes the departed'—woe to them!
They say I'm mourning the departed, so woe to them!
Did I expect rewards from the departed?
Did I hope to gain rewards from the departed?

Out of envy, they refused to let me make a living man a model
They resented out of envy that I take the living as
For them, an example that might find someone to follow it.
An example for them and a model that may find an emulator.

Then, when I mourned the dead, discharging his dues,
So when I mourned the dead, fulfilling their rights,
I found one envious of his remains and hostile.
I found envious people resenting the remnants and blaming me.

If you do not honor your pledges to one who has died,
If you have not kept your covenant with one deceased,
Then you are no faithful keeper of pledges to the living.
Then you are not, for the living, a keeper and watcher of the covenant.

So let death not fold away your pledge to a brother;
So let not death wrap up your pact made with a brother
And suppose him far away, in a valley other than yours.
And give him away through a valley other than yours, far away.

Even if you both have come to think your meeting far off.
Even if you and he are far apart in the meeting.

I mourned a life virtuously with praise appropriate for it
And adorned an era already adorned with glories.
And kept a pact with glories fitting for it.

And consoled a household whose heaven shone in rivalry,
And I consoled a house whose sky
With elders like moons and beardless youths like brilliant stars.
Were chiefs, moons, and flowing rivers.

To Allah, Ismail, and descend in a plain
Whose reaches and far corners bounty has shaded.
Shaded by dew all around and brooks.

You see great mercy behind its sky
Enfolding piety and sins alike in its bounty.
Devotion rolls up in its captivity and disobedience.

In the presence of a King who does not prevent shade for a resorter
Nor pardon to the repentant, nor forgiveness to those who hope.
Nor pardon for a repentant nor amnesty for a hopeful.

And I swear you were a man who did not forget his religion
Nor did his worldly life distract him, for all that it was.
Nor was he distracted from it by the world and its vanity.

And you were, whenever needs were hard to fulfil,
One who met the needs of orphans and widows.
A judge for the needy orphans and widows.

And you used to pray in congregation with kings
And you kept night vigil, alone with yourself.
And you used to stand alone worshipping at night.

And whoever is granted access through the standing of kings,
Whoever is given access through the glory of kings
Yet does no good, has received nothing precious.
Will not do good deeds unless he is given a lot.

And you were the bold, ready champion in every situation
And you were bold in blaming at every stance
Where right looked about and found no defender.
Where truth was being twisted and found no protector.

I studied the qualities of men, yet found none,
I examined the morals of men but did not find—
However noble those qualities, to rival resolve.
Even if morals are majestic—any second to determination.
مِنَamong العَزمِresolve ماthat which يُحيِgives life to فُحولاًmighty men كَثيرَةًmany

وَقَدَّمَ كافورَ الخَصِيِّ الطَواشِيا
There is resolve that gives life to many mighty men,
From determination what revives many glories
And brought Kafur, the castrated eunuch, to the fore;
And presented the camphor of the eunuch Tawashi.

وَأَنزَلَهُ عَن رُتبَةِ الشِعرِ هاجِيا
And there is that which debased the master of odes as a panegyrist,
And he did not bring down, praising the Master of Odes,
And lowered him from poetry's rank as a satirist.
The rank of poetry, outraging and mocking it.

For eloquence is not invective when you are angry,
Eloquence is not abuse if you are angry
Nor is it false praise when you are pleased;
Nor is it the falsity of praise if you are content.

But rather the guidance of God the Generous, and His inspiration,
But it is the generous guidance of Allah and His revelation
Through which you carried a lamp among people, as a guide.
You carried the lantern among people, guiding.

It overflows upon the living with light and at times
Illuminate the dark grave cairns over the dead.
Illuminates the roaming skulls of the dead.

Bodies perish, but eloquence is immortal;
The bodies perish while rhetoric is immortalized
Indeed, aged wine makes one forget the vessels.
Beware, that the emancipation of wine makes one forget the cups.

You departed, Abu Abd al-Hamid, cleared
You have gone, Abu Abdul Hameed, exonerated
Of blame, praised in every aspect, and pure;
From blame, commended in all respects, pure.

With few faults, in an age that sees high deeds
Few equals in an era that sees sins as grandeur
As sins, and among people who invent faults.
And people who fabricate grandeur.

We folded you away like a keen blade received by its sheath,
We wrapped you up like one wrapped by his scabbard
Yet you had not rested before we drew you forth, still keen.
But you did not rest until we sent you off to what passed.

So on people's lips you were the story of a benefactor,
So you were to mouths a summarized story
And in their ears you were an exalted tale.
And you were, to ears, a heightened discourse.

You kept faith for an age with the one who brought you close to the throne,
And you missed who brought you close in the kingdom for a period
And it seemed wondrous for people to see a loyal man.
So it was wondrous that people saw a fulfiller.

They raised an uproar in the wake of your death,
They stirred over the traces of your death a commotion
And stirred our memories and brought those nights back.
And provoked for us the memory and returned the nights.

And whoever outpaces history is not safe from partiality
Whoever preceded history is not safe from passion
When it persists, nor can he escape rancor as it flares up.
Surfacing, nor from resentment of a critic.

عَرَفتَ المُلاحي مِنهُمو وَالمُحابِيا
When the living write the history of their own generation,
When the living write the history of their generation
You see who quarrels among them, and who shows favoritism.
You recognize the sincere ones among them and the hypocrites.

If the constitution is secure, what is past weighs little,
When the constitution is unharmed, the departed one declines
And whatever events lie ahead weigh little too.
And declines whatever events were upcoming.

Beware, every sin to the nights, for its sake,
We have veiled with our pardon and deliberate forgetting.
We have overlooked, pardoned, and forgotten.
