في زهرتَي ذا العود من

أهل الهوى جُمعت صفات

أهل الهوى جُمعت صفات

In the two blossoms of this stem,

In the two flowers of this fragrant wood

the qualities of lovers are gathered.

Are combined the traits of those who love -

كالعاشقَين تقابلا

كالعاشقَين تقابلا

لكن على سُرر النبات

لكن على سُرر النبات

Like two lovers, they faced one another,

Like two lovers meeting

but upon the couches of plants.

Yet on the beds of plants.

متآنسين يلاقيان الحـ

متآنسين يلاقيان الحـ

ـب من كل الجهات

ـب من كل الجهات

Enjoying each other's company, they encounter love

Making friendly, from every side

from every direction.

They meet love.

هذا على هذا حنا

هذا على هذا حنا

ولذا إلى هذا التفات

ولذا إلى هذا التفات

This one leaned over that one,

This leaning on that,

and that one turned toward this.

And so to this one’s glancing.

لكن في الفجر الحيا

لكن في الفجر الحيا

ة وفي الضحى لهما الممات

ة وفي الضحى لهما الممات

But at dawn there is life,

But at dawn of life

and by forenoon, death for them both.

And at midday for them is death.

I swear, they truly lived, and never

Alas, they lived and never hoped

cherished a hope that then slipped away.

A hope, so it passed.

من لي بسوق للحيا

ة يقال فيها خذ وهات

ة يقال فيها خذ وهات

Who will find me a market for life,

If only I had a market for life

where it is said, 'Take and give,'

Where one could say, take and bring -

فأبيع عمرا في الهمو

فأبيع عمرا في الهمو

م بساعة في الطيبات

م بساعة في الطيبات

so I may sell a lifetime amid worries

Then I'd sell a lifetime of worries

for an hour amid delights?

For an hour of pleasures.
