    If I sacrifice my soul, how can I be blamed

    When the gazelles have shot and struck their mark?

    فيهِ لِمَحتومِ القَضاءِ سِهامُ

    They aimed at my heart with a piercing arrow;

    Within it, inexorable fate has arrows.

    O heart, do not despair at love's calamity,

    And be patient, for calamities do not last.

    People's hearts knew before you what love's anguish was,

    And fate, with its decrees, made them taste it.

    Minds carry their owners forward; then, when fate runs its course,

    Minds stumble, and sound judgment slips.

    Could I have known, though calamities are many,

    That calamities were an eye and a figure?

    كَبِدي عَلَيكِ مِنَ البَريءِ سَلامُ

    They both harmed my liver, though I had not exposed it;

    My liver, peace be upon you from one who is blameless.

    And indeed I say to whoever urges her cups along:

    Your cups have sat down, while sorrows stand.

    It flowed between my ribs only as

    The wine jars flowed with it, and the goblet streamed.
