رأيت امرأ ذاق الكفوف ولم يبل

رأيت امرأ ذاق الكفوف ولم يبل

وفي الصلَف المذموم قد زاد حدَّه

وفي الصلَف المذموم قد زاد حدَّه

I saw a man who had tasted slaps yet did not care,

I saw a man who tasted hardship but did not give up

and in blameworthy arrogance had overstepped his bounds.

And in his reprehensible obstinacy he increased his limit

فقلت ارتجع فالناس في مصر أرّخوا

فقلت ارتجع فالناس في مصر أرّخوا

So I said, “Turn back, for people in Egypt have recorded the date:
