I asked you by affection, Abu Husayn,

And by the old bonds of honor and pledges,

And by love for you hidden in my heart,

And another, steadfast in your heart for me:

Is it true that the nights folded away

Will be unfolded between Ahmad and al-Walid,

And that watering places where we once were

Will draw near for companionship and drinking?

Your arrival, with your advancement, brings me

Good fortune upon good fortune upon good fortune.

You came to your haunts after an absence,

And you were the full moon whose arrival was hoped for.

If they have raised you a rank, then higher still—

Indeed, crescent moons were created to ascend.

And I swear your eminence has no end,

Nor is there room in it for further increase.
