I asked my beloved for a kiss,

But out of shyness, he withheld it from me.

So I kept my patience until he dozed off,

And leaned over his cheek with kisses.

    وعما جرى بيننا لا تسل

    Then he stripped the robe of slumber from his eyelid;

And do not ask what passed between us.

And he said, “With the touch of your lips you have wounded

My cheeks, and your offense cannot be borne.”

So I said, “You yourself wounded my heart,

And made it bleed with the arrows of your eyes.

And sacred law decrees retribution for wounds:

    A wound for a wound—a just decree.”

Then my beloved showed a smile of approval,

And swayed like a branch on a sand dune, then straightened.

And said, “By the blackness of the eyes

That taught you tender love poetry,

You shall surely be a target for the arrows of my glances

If ever you do this again.”
