I am benevolence's daughter, mother of the poor.

There is no refuge besides me for those seeking help.

You see none around me but those in hardship,

When I give with left hand and right.

I have little ones, all of them at school,

    Where they receive clear knowledge.

And men, each of them like a father to me,

Sincere in his love, loyal and trustworthy.

How many households have had the world close in on them,

After they had prospered for many years!

Aid came to them through their doors,

When the benefactors' messenger reached them.

Tell whoever has accumulated money and possessions:

Lend to God—what an excellent debtor!

And give alms, for that is a fortress protecting wealth,

And peace of soul in worldly life and faith.

Every year my night shines forth,

The orphans' night, the eye of the afflicted.

During it I lament my poverty to God,

And hope in God is relief for the despairing.
