    Humiliation in departure and return—

    Is this the whole of your story, O Urabi?

    فمن يعفو عن الوطن المصاب

    Those far and near have pardoned you;

    Who, then, will forgive on behalf of the stricken homeland?

    And they asked neither your sons nor ours,

    Nor did they heed the angry people.

    So live in Egypt, richly endowed with honors,

    Of lofty renown, in the bloom of youth.

    Is there a difference between Ceylon and Egypt,

    When there are redcoats in both?

    You are granted pardon from your exile there

    By people more in need of repentance than you.

    No, by God, they had no power to pardon,

    Nor did they control the punishment of old.

    Nor did they equal you in sincerity of heart,

    Though they equaled you in deceitful traits.

    كعهدك إذ تحييك الطوابي

    A servile government and ignorant grandees,

    As in your day, when the forts saluted you;

    وإذ دخلوا ونعلك في الركاب

    And when they struck, while your sword was still undrawn;

    And when they entered, your sandal in the stirrup;

    وضاقت بالغباوة والتغابي

    And when the world was filled with hypocrisy for you,

    And was choked with stupidity and feigned stupidity;

    وإذ يغزَى الأعادي بالسباب

    And when honors were acquired by wishing,

    And when enemies were assailed with insults;

    And when you were given the throne in assemblies,

    And given the crown in frivolous speeches.

    You will see, if you lift your gaze in Egypt,

    The men of the hour among those companions.

    And they had abandoned your side when it lay desolate,

    And had sought refuge with a mightier side.

    And by the Gospel they had sworn to some people,

    Just as they swore before you by the Book.

    They want women without a veil,

    While today we have greater need of the veil.

    What, then, will the living know of us,

    When it is said, 'Urabi has returned to her'?
