How beautiful he is among the fair!

In form, one might call him a bān tree.

Like the full moon, the eyes take him in,

yet they have no hands to grasp him.

He has mastered the breast and heart,

so East and West lie in his hands.

    فَعَسى يُشيرُ الحاجِبان

    And all I wish from him is a glance;

so may his eyebrows give a sign.

So may he give alms from his beauty—

he who has no equal in beauty.

So let him deal justly or unjustly,

    for he holds the reins.

Coquetry is the right of one who has

    a place in every limb.
