لامَreproached فيكُمover you عَذولُهُhis reproacher وَأَطالاand went on at length
كَمhow long إِلىuntil كَمhow long يُعالِجُhe contends with العُذّالاthe reproachers
His reproacher rebuked him over you, and went on at length.
There is no blame on you in prolonging estrangement
How long—how much longer—must he contend with the reproachers?
How long will the blamer go on blaming?
كُلَّevery يَومٍday لَهُمthey have أَحاديثُwords لَومٍof reproach
بَدَأَتthey began راحَةًas comfort وَعادَتand became مَلالاtedium
Every day they have words of reproach,
Every day they have new tales of blame
Which began as comfort and turned to tedium.
That began in comfort and ended in boredom
بَعَثتُI evoked ذِكرَكُمthe memory of you فَجاءَتso they came خِفافاًlight
وَاِقتَضَتand they demanded هَجرَكُمforsaking you فَراحَتso they went ثِقالاheavy
I evoked your memory, and their words came light;
I awakened thoughts of you and they came light as a breeze
And they demanded forsaking you, so they went away heavy.
But parting with you demanded a heavy load
أَيُّهاO you المُنكِرُwho condemns الغَرامَpassionate love عَلَيناon our part
حَسبُكَenough for you اللَهُGod قَدindeed جَحَدتَyou have denied الجَمالاbeauty
O you who condemn our passion,
O you who deny love is upon us
God is enough for you: you have indeed denied beauty.
God forbid that you deny beauty
آيَةُthe sign الحُسنِof beauty لِلقُلوبِto hearts تَجَلَّتrevealed itself
كَيفَhow لاnot تَعشَقُlove passionately العُيونُthe eyes اِمتِثالاin obedience
The sign of beauty has revealed itself to hearts;
The sign of beauty has appeared to hearts
How can eyes not love in obedience?
How could eyes not fall in love at the sight?
لَكَfor you نُصحيmy counsel وَماand not عَلَيكَincumbent on you جِداليdebating me
آفَةُthe bane النُصحِof counsel أَنthat يَكونَit becomes جِدالاan argument
My counsel is yours; you need not debate me.
My advice to you, though I argue not
The bane of counsel is that it becomes an argument.
The flaw of advice is to turn into argument
وَهَبِand suppose الرُشدَgood sense أَنَّنيthat I أَناI myself أَسلوI cease to love
ماnot مِنَpart of العَقلِreason أَنto تَرومَyou seek مُحالاan impossibility
And suppose it wise that I myself cease to love;
Grant me wisdom, I ask
It is not reasonable to seek the impossible.
No mind seeks the impossible
