  1. رأى وجهه باردا جامدا

    فراح يسنّ عليه الجلم

    He saw his face, cold and rigid,

    So he began sharpening the shears on it.

  2. ولو كان صانعه منصفا

    بصيرا لقط عليه القلم

    And had his maker been fair,

    And discerning, he would have trimmed the pen’s nib on it.
