هَلdid ...? تَيَّمَenslaved with love البانُthe bān tree فُؤادَheart الحَمامof the dove
فَناحَso it lamented فَاِستَبكىthen made weep جُفونَeyelids الغَمامof the clouds
Has the bān tree enslaved the dove's heart,
Has the estrangement made the lover’s heart mournful,
So it lamented and drew tears from the clouds' eyelids?
So he weeps and the clouds' eyes shed tears?
أَمor شَفَّهُwasted it ماwhat شَفَّنيwasted me فَاِنثَنىso it turned away
مُبَلبَلَdistraught البالِof mind شَريدَfugitive المَنامsleep
Or has what wasted me wasted it, so it turned away,
Or did what healed me injure him, so he recoiled,
Distraught of mind, bereft of sleep?
Confused in anguish, his dreams scattered?
يَهُزُّهُstirs it الأَيكُthe grove إِلىtoward إِلفِهِits mate
هَزَّthe stirring of الفِراشِthe bed المُدنَفَthe wasted invalid المُسَتهامthe love-crazed one
The grove stirs it toward its mate,
Yearning shakes his frame towards his beloved,
As a bed stirs a wasted, love-crazed invalid.
It shook the nest, disturbing the settled dove.
وَتوقِدُand kindles الذِكرىmemory بِأَحشائِهِwithin its entrails
And memory kindles within its entrails
And remembrance ignites within his essence
Embers of longing, quick to blaze.
Embers of passion, fiercely blazing.
كَذَلِكَlikewise العاشِقُthe lover عِندَat الدُجىthe dark of night
ياoh لِلهَوىfor passion! مِمّاfrom what يُثيرُstirs الظلامthe darkness
Such is the lover in the dark of night—
Thus is the lover at dusk—
Oh, the passion that darkness stirs!
Oh, for love, what darkness stirs!
لَهُfor him إِذاwhen هَبَّrises الجَوىlove's anguish صَرعَةٌa swoon
مِنfrom دونِهاbelow it السِحرُsorcery وَفِعلُand the effect المُدامof wine
When love's anguish rises, a swoon overtakes him,
He is overpowered when passion kindles,
Beside which sorcery and wine's power fall short.
Beyond it only sorcery and wine’s doing.
رَوَّعتَyou terrified حَتّىeven مُهَجاتِthe souls الحَمامof the doves
O ravaging separation, enough cruelty!
O critic of severance, enough cruelty—
You have terrified even the souls of doves.
You have terrified even the hearts of doves.
تِلكَthose قُلوبُhearts الطَيرِof birds حَمَّلتَهاyou burdened them
ماwhat ضَعُفَتwere too weak عَنهُfor it قُلوبُhearts الأَنامof humankind
Those are birds' hearts; you have burdened them
You have burdened those birds’ hearts
With what human hearts could not bear.
With what has overwhelmed people’s hearts.
لاmay ... not ضَرَبَstrike المَقدورُfate أَحبابَناour loved ones
وَلاnor أَعاديناour enemies بِهَذاwith this الحُسامthe sharp sword
May fate not strike our loved ones,
Destiny has not struck down our loved ones,
Nor our enemies, with this sword.
Nor made enemies of us with this sword.
ياO زَمَنَtime الوَصلِof union لَأَنتَyou indeed المُنىwishes
وَلِلمُنىand for wishes عِقدٌa necklace وَأَنتَand you النِظامthe string
O time of union, you are indeed all I wish for;
O era of union, you are the wish fulfilled,
And wishes have a necklace, and you are its string.
And with the fulfilled wish you are its order.
لِلَّهِto God! عَيشٌa life ليfor me وَعَيشٌand a life لَهاfor her
كُنتَyou were بِهِin it سَمحاًgenerous رَخِيَّloose الزِمامthe rein
God, what a life was mine, and what a life was hers!
A life for me and a life for her, through you
In it you were generous, with a loosened rein.
I was indulgent, with loosened reins.
وَأُنسُand the joy أَوقاتٍof hours ظَفِرناwe gained possession بِهاof them
فيin غَفلَةِthe heedlessness الأَيّامِof the days لَوif دُمتَyou had lasted دامit would have lasted
And the joy of hours we won
And the joy of times we gained
While the days were heedless—had you lasted, that joy would have lasted.
Unaware in days, if only you had remained.
لَكِنَّهُbut it is الدَهرُTime قَليلُscant الجَدىbounty
مُضَيَّعُneglected العَهدِthe covenant لَئيمُignoble الذِمامpledged obligations
But it is Time, scant in bounty,
But time is seldom loyal,
Faithless in its pledges, ignoble in its obligations.
Breaking pledges, ungenerous.
لَوif سامَحَتناit had indulged us فيin السَلامِthe farewell النَوىparting
لَطالَwould surely have lasted حَتّىuntil الحَشرِJudgment Day ذاكَthat السَلامfarewell
Had parting indulged us in our farewell,
Had we bid farewell in amity,
That farewell would have lasted till Judgment Day.
That peace would have lasted till Resurrection.
وَلَاِنقَضىand would have ended العُمرانُboth lifetimes فيin وَقفَةٍa pause
نَسلوwe forget بِهاduring it الغُمضَsleep وَنَسلوand we forget الطَعامfood
And both our lives would have ended in a single pause,
And life would pass in a gathering
Where we would forget sleep and forget food.
Where we rest eyes and rest provision.
قالَتshe said وَقَدwhile already كادَalmost يَميدُswayed الثَرىthe earth
مِنfrom هَدَّةِthe collapse الصَبرِof patience وَهَولِand the terror المَقامof the scene
She said, as the earth almost reeled,
She said—and the ground almost collapsed
From patience's collapse and the terror of the scene,
From the shock of patience and awe of the situation.
وَغابَتِand vanished الأَعيُنُthe eyes فيin دَمعِهاtheir tears
وَنالَتِand attained الأَلسُنُthe tongues إِلّاexcept الكَلامspeech
And eyes vanished in their tears,
Eyes disappeared in her tears
And tongues attained everything but speech:
And tongues, save lamenting, fell silent.
ياO بَينُparting وَلّىhas gone جَلَديmy fortitude فَاِتَّئِدso go gently
وَياand O زَمانيmy time بَعضُsome هَذاof this حَرامforbidden
O parting, my fortitude is gone, so go gently!
O separation, my skin is worn—restrain yourself
And O my time, some of this is forbidden!
And O my time, some of this is forbidden.
فَقُلتُthen I said وَالصَبرُwhile patience يُجاريkeeps pace with الأَسىsorrow
وَاللُبُّand the mind مَأخوذٌcaptive وَدَمعيand my tears اِنسِجامflowing
Then I said, as patience vied with sorrow,
I said—and patience contends with sorrow,
And my mind was captive, and my tears a stream:
My heart is seized, my tears concur.
إِنif كانَis ليfor me عِندَكَwith you هَذاthis الهَوىlove
بِأَيِّماwith whatever قُلتُI said كَتَمتُI concealed الغَرامpassion
If you bear me this love,
If with you I have this passion,
In whatever I said, I concealed my passion.
Tell me, with what have I concealed my love?
