God is greatest! How many wonders there are in victory!

O Khalid of the Turks, revive the Khalid of the Arabs.

A glorious peace founded upon a victorious war:

the sword is in its sheath, and justice stands aloft.

How beautiful a hope placed in the sword that proved true,

and how sweet a hope placed in judgment that did not fail!

Your steps in the cause of right were all noble,

and you are nobler still in stanching flowing blood.

You emulated the warfare of Saladin's followers in an age

when fighting knows neither law nor honor.

Your sword committed no atrocity; no violation was made

by your lances of the sanctity of monks and crosses.

    وَلَو سُئِلتَ بِغَيرِ النَصرِ لَم تُجِبِ

    You were asked for peace upon victory, and generously granted it;

had you been asked without victory, you would not have answered.

A decision the horses accepted reproachfully,

and the sword submitted, folded away in anger.

You did what resembles piety, though fashioned

were your people's swords, never content in sheaths.

I need not add to your knowledge of Islam:

all nobility lies in Islam and ancestral honor.

    فَهَب لَهُم هُدنَةٌ مِن رَأيِكَ الضَرِبِ

    You granted them a truce sought from your sword;

now grant them a truce from your forceful judgment.

From you there came to them in Lausanne a master strategist,

whom war brought forth from its thick-necked serpents.

A deaf man who hears the secrets of those plotting against him,

and is not vexed by the angry loudmouth's clamor.

Never did their desires diverge over an aim

without his gaining some fulfillment of that aim.

Ankara armed itself to meet peace,

and the sword paved the way for speeches in Lausanne.

Tell one who builds a kingdom's pillar with words:

rule is built upon battalions, not books.

Seek no triumph for right among nations

to whom right is merely an aspect of might.

There is no good in a pulpit unless it has

a prop of dusky spears, or a prop of keen swords.

Nor are weapons a people's whole equipment

unless they are equipped with moral virtues.

If fangs alone, without character, conferred distinction,

lions and wolves would be equal in rank.

The Greek leaders gained nothing from what they amassed

of weapons, or the troop-bands they drove forward,

or their leaving Asia Minor fully armed,

like a colony of bees or a bristling hedgehog.

The Turks had hours of patience on the day of their calamity,

written in gold upon the pages of virtue.

Costly burdens and sacrifices that never cried out, nor

were sullied by reminders of favors or spoiled by lies.

You know them by deeds and their praiseworthy effect,

not by any name or title.

They were united in two things: religion and homeland,

as sacrificial offerings are gathered in God's name and devotion.

In them lies life for a people not dead in character,

and hope for a rising, resourceful people.

For their sake, the Muslims' eyelids tasted no sleep

until their night cleared to reveal its fresh, bright dawn.

They were hope and they were despair; then was erased

by certainty's light the darkness of doubt and misgivings.

The Turks sought means, but found none

like the sword as a ladder to glory or a rope.

They plunged into war anew, hoping it would bring them

to the shore of deliverance; yet it became a rock of ruin.

God's ship was not overcome upon its fastenings

amid the storms, nor defeated upon its timbers.

God made its course secure and gave it, instead

of an evil end, a fair outcome.

He chose its captain from its own people, and it escaped

the guile of a protector and the deception of a mandatary.

The water of Sakarya was nothing but Saqar,

surging until it drowned the Greeks in flame.

When its fire rose up, seeking them as firewood,

    their command became the firewood-bearer.

Their fated deaths hastened them toward you that day:

alas for a runner led astray, drawn by death's call!

They extended bridges, and God untied what they had tied,

save paths that followed Pharaoh's course.

Distress engulfed them through their rulers' counsel,

and the most ill-omened counsel casts you into distress.

They made a kingdom seem fair to the foolish masses,

from the lion's mane, or from its tangled thicket.

They devised a deadly outing for the army:

whoever takes his leisure in the thickets does not return.

    كِلا السَرابَينِ أَظماهُم وَلَم يَصُبِ

    The prince went astray with them, as did the minister;

both mirages made them thirsty and yielded no rain.

The two pulled them to and fro as they pleased, with a variety

    of beguiling wishes and dreams.

How can a nation find success when it has become

two opposing factions in the face of a grievous event?

You advanced like a rushing flood, showing no mercy

to the lowlands, nor gentleness to the hills.

You hurled against them saddled, raging winds,

bearing the lions of al-Shara in helmets and leather armor.

They blew upon them, and they melted away from their strongholds,

while the snow upon the mountain summits had not melted.

When you shattered their two wings and their heart,

they flew with scattered wings from terror.

Flight grew frantic; every spear-holder cast away

his lance, and every pack-bearer shed his load.

How fine their retreat—in a wondrous language

in which defeat is called a fine withdrawal!

Their commander did not know, when you surrounded him,

whether you had descended from the heights or come from the slopes.

    فَلَم تَتِمَّ وَكانَت خُطَّةَ الهَرَبِ

    You captured him while he was devising his plan;

it was never completed—and it was a plan of escape.

Those leagues of plain and mountain:

you brought near what had been far away.

The Messenger's horses have steel for their substance,

while other horses are made of flesh and sinew.

In mere nights, can you traverse the steadfast mountains upon them,

and cross the earth from pole to pole?

Ask the darkness about them: which strongholds did they not

leap, and which fortresses of the Rum did they not vault?

They swore: unless they reached Izmir, they would alight at no

other water, nor settle upon grass.

Endurance is a trait in them and in their riders,

inherited, father after father, amid terror.

As you were born upon their manes, they were born

in the field of war, not in a spacious courtyard.

Until you rose over Izmir in an orbit

of exalted renown, not raised upon meteors,

in a procession that history stood reviewing,

neither denying, nor disparaging, nor casting doubt.

A day like Badr: the horses of right danced

upon the earth, while God's horses were in the clouds.

White-blazed horses, shaded by a radiant, spreading banner,

Badr-like in its staff, brocade, and streamers.

    Intoxicated with lofty triumph, swaying

from victory's intoxication, not from exhaustion's stupor.

They remind the earth of foam it has never forgotten,

pouring like musk from the flanks of al-Sakb.

Until the call to prayer for victory rose, and they slowed

to the winner's gait, once it has claimed the prize-reed.

    Greetings, O conqueror, and congratulations

on a victory's wonder that will remain a wonder through the ages,

and a precious tribute of praise that has no equal

except wonder at your noble companions:

those steadfast when affliction befalls them,

    like a lion gritting its fangs amid calamities;

those who make Indian swords their tongues,

and write with the tips of long, slender lances.

No difficult thing is difficult for them to ride,

nor is the impossible beyond their pursuit.

Nor are calamities, when men are struck by them,

fatal if their character remains unhurt.

Commanders of battle, venturers into deadly peril,

the stakes of a kingdom, the lions of a battlefield.

I have tested them; tell how much, through them, you strengthened

of what was fading, and how many ruins you rebuilt!

How many tangled strongholds you breached through them,

and how many clamorous armies you routed through them!

How much glory you built through them! They ascribed no

clamor to destruction that was absent from construction.

From the routed remnants of an army and the wreckage of a kingdom,

and from the remnant of a people, you brought forth a wonder.

You brought forth for mankind, from humiliation and failure,

a people united behind the lofty lance-points.

When you brought a Badr from its places of rising,

the House turned to look within its curtains and veils.

The spacious, fragrant Garden welcomed it, smiling:

indeed, Medina the Illumined, with its musk-scented soil.

The abode applied its purest perfume and came

to the Messenger's door, touching the noblest thresholds.

Victory perfumed the regions of the Hijaz—and how many

nights it had spent without comfort or joy!

The East's chief cities adorned themselves; there vied

victory's festivals in fresh embroidered finery.

Damascus roused the sons of Ayyub, and they awoke

to congratulate the sons of Hamdan in Aleppo.

    India's Muslims and Hindus rejoiced,

and Egypt's Muslims and Copts were glad.

Kingdoms that Islam united in a kinship

close-knit, and that the East embraced in a common lineage.

From every district, casting a kohl-lined eye

toward your place, or gesturing with a henna-dyed hand,

saying: 'Were it not for the Turkish youth, there would have befallen us

a day like the Jews' day, which was close at hand.'
