At the festival of justice, or the day of blood,
In the festival of truth or on the day of bloodshed
Are souls of martyrs who have not spoken.
A group of martyrs who did not speak

The light of their blood shines upon Hathor,
The light of their blood appears on their shrouds
Like Husayn's blood upon the crescent of Muharram.
Like the blood of Al-Hussein on the crescent of Muharram

The day of struggle, like the opening of its daylight,
The day of jihad is like the morning of it
Sways its flanks, its mouth smiling.
With swaying limbs and smiling mouth

They rose to make pilgrimage to the house that day, as though they were
They set out to perform hajj where it seems as if they are
Radiant angels in the sky of the pilgrimage season.
Flowers of angels in the sky of the season

Why should they not look down from heaven, when indeed
Why do they not look down from the sky but rather
Their graves lie between the clouds and stars?
Their graves are between the clouds and the stars

The absent ones grieved them, and they were dismayed
The absent ones were shocked by it and startled by
By what befell the radiant yet darkened house.
What happened to the illuminated, darkened house

And if you look at life, you will find it
And if you look at life, you will find it
A wedding held on the fringes of a mourning gathering.
A wedding held on the sides of a mourning ceremony

Blood-red freedom must have
Freedom must have
Solace that lulls her wound like balm,
A solace that heals its wounds like balm

And a smile rising over her features, just as one
And a smile that rises above its captivity like
Rises on a bereaved mother's mouth and a widow's lips.
What rises above the mouth of the bereaved and the lips of the orphan

Had I witnessed the daylight of the day of heroism,
If I had witnessed the day of heroism
I would have composed for generations what had never been composed.
I would have composed for generations what has not been composed

Its reality sang and its beauty escaped
The reach of inspired, ingenious imagination.
The inspired, creative imagination

Were it not for exile's afflictions or its obstacles—
If not for the tribulations of exile or its obstacles
And exile is a state of Hell's torment—
And exile is a state of the torture of hell

I would have gathered the colors of events into a picture,
I would have gathered the colors of events into an image
Portraying in it the figure of one who submits.
In which I depict the image of the submissive one

And depicted the Nile in it, restraining its anger,
And in it I would recount the Nile swallowing its rage
And depicted it enraged, not restraining its anger.
And recount it raging, not swallowing

It called the country into the fray, then ventured forth—
The countries called to adventure, so it adventured
Patriotism, with an intellectual and a teacher.
Patriotism with an intellectual and a teacher

It rose against the protector standing ready, and swore
It revolted against the mighty protector and swore
To seek protection from none but Him—exalted be His majesty.
By none but He, may His majesty be glorified, it will not seek protection

Its Lord emptied the quiver, and
Its Lord scattered arrows and it chose
His hand chose three arrows to bring it victory.
His hand for its support with three arrows

Each an unarmed man, his right held in his right hand,
From every helpless one, his right in His right hand
Like a sword in the right hand of a distinguished armored warrior.
Like the sword in the right hand of the brave, distinguished one

They did not draw back in an hour that had granted
They did not hesitate in an hour in which
The king of the seas victory over every Caesar who drew back.
The king of the seas had triumphed over every retreating Caesar

They halted their mounts at his palace steps,
They stood at the foot of his palace
With might and authority barring the steps.
With might and authority below the foot

And they advanced until, when they had conveyed their message,
And they advanced until when they reached
They inspired young Egypt: 'Advance!'
They inspired Egypt, the young woman, advance!

The lion cubs streamed from the forest; within them seethed
From the absence the panthers poured out their capture
The lioness's milk, and the lion's vein stirred.
The milk of the lionesses and the sweat of the wolf

O day of struggle, you were clothed in the hue of her beauty
The day of the struggle, its beauty was like your complexion
By freedom, who dyed your skin with blood.
Freedom which dyed your skin with blood

You became one of time's brightest days, and now
You have become of the gems of the times, and your
The lines of your scowling face have smiled.
Frowning face's smile has become laughing

And indeed, you were orphaned, and so became more magnificent;
You were an orphan, but became greater in awe
Oh, would that losing the homeland's Sa'd had not orphaned you!
If only you were not orphaned by the good fortune of protection

Let the cubs' father sleep, his eyelids filled with rest;
So the father of cubs can sleep with eyes fully closed
The cubs do not sleep heedless of the lair.
The panther does not sleep away from the den
