Ashim, O you through whose love we rise,

And for whom Suha's skin is a sandal.

Amid longing, the paths toward you grew hard to reach,

And meeting you, once easy, became difficult.

Oh, if only I knew—for distance breeds

Neglect, and life is all preoccupation—

Do you remember, or have you forgotten how it was for us,

When we were two children, and love was a child,

When India and the lands marveled at us,

And the onlookers and the family marveled,

And when passion crept in, striving,

While we had neither thought nor reason?

    وما فعلنا فللهوى الفعل

    Whatever we said, love was the one who said it;

And whatever we did, the deed belonged to love.

And if we moved a foot to a place,

The movement was for love, not for the place.

So if, O prince, you have forgotten us,

Then we neither forget nor cease to love.

That sky of India bears witness,

And its earth, the mountains, and the plain,

And India's stars, as long as they rise for us,

And as long as their wide eyes watch over us:

Indeed, I am true to the pledge as long as I live; and if

I am gone, the pledges remain; they do not vanish.
