    Amina, O my beloved daughter,

I congratulate you on your second year.

And I ask that you remain safe for me through the years,

And that you be granted good sense and health,

And that you be destined for the most virtuous of men,

And that you bear noble souls.

But I ask you, by your parents,

And beseech you, by your precious toys:

Do you know what events have come to pass,

And what happened in the past year?

And how often you peed in silken garments,

And how many vessels you have broken,

And how often eyelids kept vigil to please you,

    While you slept in anger,

And how often your father's pockets grew empty,

While your pockets were not empty,

And how often he lamented the bitterness of his life,

While you and your sweets were off to one side,

And how often you fell ill and so made him ill,

And you recovered, becoming his healer.

And he laughs if you come to him laughing,

And he weeps when you come to him weeping.

And, strange to say, the events have passed,

While you have forgotten the latest of them.

So if a soul could envy its offspring,

I would envy you, carefree little girl that you are.
