Beneath arrows and their torrential downpour.

    Despotism collapses around its courts,

    As idolatry collapsed around Salah.

And the false god of power is flung face down,

    Its idols and phantoms shattered.

They make mourning a rampart for rejoicing.

And love walked over resentment, wiping it away.

And the noble son of a noble, openhanded man.

Sweet in disposition, within a bitter spear-shaft,

Drunk with grace, yet sober in dignity.

Many kinds of weapons: spears and sword blades.

Luminaries of an assembly, lions of the morning.

From the ore of the constitution, are not genuine.

And it stood empty of morning and evening visitors.

A spider's weaving covered it, adding to it,

Like the cave, honor and the mien of righteousness.

Youth's patience is short with counselors.

You are sons of the grievous day; you grew up

Amid crashing storms and raging winds.

And you saw the united homeland as a rock

Amid calamities and their sweeping torrent.

You witnessed the ranks split apart, and the harm wrought

By a usurper's commands and an insolent man's prohibitions.

    فَإِذا تَفَرَّقَ كانَ بَعضَ نُباحِ

    The voice of peoples, united, is a roar;

When divided, it is merely a little barking.

The days made you thirsty, then gave you to drink

The muddy waters of kindness, not a pure draught.

And when good is granted you by a grudging giver,

The giver's character shows upon the gift.

I left you like one whose wing is broken,

Neither in snares nor freely released.

Who turned shackles into the blossoms of necklaces,

And clothed fetters in the beauty of silver ornaments?

    Long endeavor and unceasing struggle.

    إِنَّ الأَناةَ سَبيلُ كُلِّ فَلاحِ

    Move toward it with lasting patience;

For patience is the path to every success.

    إِنَّ الشِراعَ مُثَقِّفُ المَلّاحِ

    And learn to build your realm from your constitution;

For the sail teaches the sailor.

O house of Mahmoud, may you be safe, and blessed be

    Your broad-faced, pyramid-like pillars.

And may you gain, from praise's beauty and sweetness,

A stone that gleams like a pearl among tributes.

The nation moved to you as though

You had brought it from its home upon a wing.

The blessings of an elder in Upper Egypt, bearing

The burden of years, a source of hope, lavish in giving.

Yesterday he gave his son to the cause,

And today he sheltered it in the noblest courtyard.
