A greeting gentler than the east breeze of Barada,
A greeting from the cold of morning whose chill makes me shiver,
and tears that cannot be staunched, O Damascus.
And tears that cannot be stemmed, oh Damascus!

And an apology from the reed pen and the rhymes:
Excuse the dialect and rhymes,
the enormity of the calamity eludes description.
The calamity is too grave for description to match.

And a remembrance, whose stirrings make my heart
Memories stir feelings in my heart,
forever turn toward you and throb.
Thoughts of you forever pulsate within me.

The nights have wounded me with what they inflicted upon you,
wounds deep within my heart.
Injuries that cut deep into the heart.

I entered you while the late afternoon shone,
I entered while the roots were entangled,
and your face was open, with smiling features.
Your face of beaming features so serene.

Beneath your orchards rivers flow,
and leaves and gray doves filled your hills.
Your meadows filled with leaves and plants.

Around me young men, morning's first light,
with lofty attainments and precedence in excellence.
Excelling in merit and lead.

Poets of eloquence sparkle at their gatherings,
and in their frames, broad-mouthed orators.
Orators of influence at their assemblies.

Reciters of my poems—marvel, then, at verse
My poems are recited by transmitters, and wondrous in every place they reach,
recited by people in every quarter.
The lions' noses twisted, their caves ignited.

I stirred their defiance until fire kindled
Each freeman among the Umayyads cried out,
in the lions' nostrils, and the battleground blazed.
Noble and resolute against their grasp.

And every free man cried out against the bit,
News reached the Caliph in succession, grieving his ears,
unyielding, with Umayyah's nobility within him.
Detailed in his mail, summarized across horizons in his messages.

God curse the tidings that came in succession,
The events seem almost legendary,
upon a friend's ears with what was hard to bear.
Yet are in fact reality in their truth.

It's said the landmarks of history were obscured,
and the telegraph sums them up across the horizons.
That they were damaged and burned.

Such is the horror of the events they contain that they almost
Are you not, Damascus, the bosom-mate of Islam,
seem a fable, though they are true.
The nurturer of glorious leadership, steadfast.

And it was said: the landmarks of history were leveled;
Saladin's crown did not adorn you more beautifully,
and it was said: ruin and fire had struck them.
No insignia made you shine brighter.

Are you not, Damascus, a foster mother to Islam?
Every civilization rising on this earth
And a nurse with a parent's standing must not be dishonored.
Has roots in your exalted soil.

Salah al-Din is your crown; it has never been adorned,
Your sky is a book of bygone treasures,
nor any parted crown graced, with anyone fairer than he.
Your land pages of history's manuscript.

Civilizations' dust not dimming their brilliance.

Your sky is a book of the past's adornments,
In Syria its flags and weddings,
and your earth a parchment of history's ornaments.
Good tidings reaching Andalusia's shores.

You built the great state and an empire
Eternity's meadows and the tales of their beauty,
whose two civilizations raised dust no rival could pierce.
Are they truer that they have faded?

Are the gardens' chambers still luxurious,
whose glad tidings resound in al-Andalus.
Does their bliss remain as before?

The abodes of eternity—alas for you, what has befallen them?
Where are the citadels' statues in their finery,
Is it true they have vanished—is it true?
Scattered and torn covers?

And are the garden chambers still arrayed in tiers?
They came out while fires blazed in the palace corners,
And does their bliss retain its order as yesterday?
Chicks chirping behind the palace.

If safety was sort from one path,
torn open and curtains being rent?
Other paths led to death's door.

They emerged, with fire around the grove,
Nights of shelling and death,
and behind the grove, fledglings being fed beak to beak.
Behind the sky, seizure and thunder.

If they sought safety by one path,
When iron storms reddened horizons,
paths to death arose before they could reach it.
Darkening horizons on their fringes.

Greet whoever guarded your dignity after frailty,
flashed and thundered beyond its sky.
Whose heart defied the stone's hardness.

When iron stormed, one horizon reddened
And to the colonists, even if
along its edges, and another horizon blackened.
Their hearts remain unmoved as rocks.

Ask whoever terrified your graceful women late at night:
France struck you in its arrogance, a warlike
is there any difference between his heart and stone?
Dullard in its insolence and foolishness.

And the colonizers, even if they act gently,
When freedom's seekers come to it
have hearts like stones that never soften.
It says: 'A gang came out and rebelled.'

He struck you with his recklessness, and struck France,
France knows that blood of revolution
a man of war with arrogance and folly in him.
Is light and truth.

Whenever seekers of a right came to him,
In its land life once flowed,
he said, 'A gang—they rebelled and broke ranks.'
As rain from the sky and bounty within.

France knows the blood of revolutionaries,
A country whose youth died for it to live,
and knows that it is light and truth.
And vanished so their people survive.

It flowed upon her soil, bearing life,
Rivers flowed with the nations' freedom,
like the sky's pouring rain, bearing sustenance.
How then can their freedom be denied?

A land whose young men died so it might live,
Sons of Syria, cast away your wishes,
and perished defending their people, so their people might survive.
Abandon your dreams.

And peoples were freed at her spearpoints—
For political tricks may fool you
how, then, are they enslaved at her spearpoints?
With princely titles while in chains.

Sons of Syria, cast aside wishful hopes,
How the lowly seemed easy prey,
and throw off your dreams—throw them off!
Bending like the crucified.

For one of politics' deceits is that you are beguiled
Rulers' favors come and go,
by titles of princely rule, though it is bondage.
But the oppressed remain in shards.

And how often a haughty neck-tilt has appeared to you in a servile man,
I counseled though we differed in homes,
as the neck of a crucified man tilts.
Yet we are one in worry and plight.

Rifts in a realm arise and then pass,
When homelands differ, unity of word
but no rift passes for a divided people.
Brings us together in speech and call.

I have counseled you, though we dwell in different lands,
You stood between death or life,
yet in sorrow we are all one East.
If you seek this life's bliss--then tear it down!

And when our lands differ, we are brought together
In every freeman's blood nations have
by an eloquence that does not differ, and a common tongue.
A pledged hand and owed debt.

فَإِن رُمتُم نَعيمَ الدَهرِ فَاِشقوا
You stand between death and life;
Who drinks and sates himself on death
so if you seek a lifetime's bliss, endure hardship.
While the free go thirsty--this cannot be justice!

يَدٌ سَلَفَت وَدَينٌ مُستَحِقُّ
And homelands have, in every free man's blood,
Victims do not build kingdoms,
a favor once bestowed and a debt now due.
Do not draw near to rights or make them just.

And who will serve death as drink and drink it,
For in the dead generations find life,
if free men are not given it to drink, and do not serve it?
In prisoners, ransom and liberation.

And nothing builds kingdoms like sacrifices,
To freedom's red dawn every blood-stained hand
or brings rights closer, or secures them.
Is a gate that will be knocked down.

For in the slain there is life for generations,
May He of Majesty reward you, Damascus' sons,
and in the captives, ransom and freedom for them.
The East's glory begins with Damascus.

You helped your brother in his ordeal,
knocked upon by every blood-stained hand.
Each brother helping his brother is but right.

May the Lord of Majesty reward you, sons of Damascus,
The Druze were never evil folk,
and the East's glory begins in Damascus.
Though blamed beyond what they deserved.

You aided your brother on the day of his ordeal,
Yet protection of a guest,
and every brother deserves his brother's aid.
Like the spring of purity, dirtied and disturbed.

The Druze were no tribe of evil,
They have a lofty mountain, with peaks and cliffs,
though they suffered punishment they did not deserve.
Wells in the clouds filled during the wet season.

For every lion cub and each young lion,
like a spring from hard rock: rugged and gentle.
A struggle below its goal and path.

As if it carries something of the heavens,
that are watering places amid dark clouds, mottled black and white.
Each of its sides noble and sincere.
