هَدِيَّةُa gift السَيِّدِof the master لِلسَيِّدِto the master
A church became a mosque—
A church became a mosque
a gift from one master to another.
A gift from lord to lord

It was a sanctuary for Jesus, then passed
It was Jesus' sanctuary, but ended up
through the Spirit's aid, to Ahmad.
With Ahmed's victory and the Spirit's support

The Romans and their princes built it
The Romans built it, and their masters
after the model of the everlasting pyramid.
In the image of the eternal pyramid

It speaks of glory and of might,
It tells of might, sublimity
and of a love for religion that never died out.
And passion for the religion that never fades

With its overflowing light

And adornments like those lodged within it
And the treasures it contained
had never found a home or been amassed.
Were housed nowhere else, nor amassed

The Virgin within it was of silver,
In it was the Virgin of silver
and the Spirit of God was of gold.
And the Spirit of God of chrysolite

Jesus was beside his mother as beside a halo,
Jesus by the halo of his mother
and his mother was beside Jesus as beside a polar star.
And the mother by the bed of her son
جَلّاهُماportrayed them both فيهاwithin it وَحَلّاهُماand adorned them both

مُصَوِّرُthe painter الرومِof the Romans القَديرُmasterful اليَدِof hand
He portrayed and adorned them both within it—
The skillful Roman artist immortalized them
the Roman painter, masterful of hand.
And embedded in the walls from his art
وَأَودَعَand placed الجُدرانَthe walls مِنfrom نَقشِهِhis designs

And upon the walls he set, from his designs,
Unique works from his singular craft
wonders of his peerless art:
So an angel in the darkness coming
فَمِنthus, among مَلاكٍan angel فيin الدُجىthe darkness رائِحٍgoing at evening
عِندَbeside مَلاكٍan angel فيin الضُحىthe morning مُغتَديsetting out early
an angel traveling through the darkness,
To an angel in the light trespassing
beside an angel setting forth in the morning,
And a plant that lived like a parrot
وَمِنand among نَباتٍa plant عاشَlived كَالبَبَّغاlike a parrot
وَهوَand it عَلىon الحائِطِthe wall غَضٌّfresh نَديdewy
and a plant that lived like a parrot,
Green and fresh on the wall
while on the wall it was fresh and dewy.
Say to whoever rivaled the powers
فَقُلthen say لِمَنto whoever شادَbuilt فَهَدَّand so shattered القُوىthe strength
قُوىthe strength الأَجيرِof the hired laborer المُتعَبِweary المُجهَدِexhausted
Then say to him who built and so shattered strength—
Of the tired, exhausted laborer
the strength of the weary, exhausted laborer—
As if he were Pharaoh when he built
كَأَنَّهُas though he were فِرعَونُPharaoh لَمّاwhen بَنىhe built
لِرَبِّهِfor his Lord بَيتاًa house فَلَمbut did not يَقصِدِact moderately
as though he were Pharaoh when he built
A house for his Lord but did not intend
a house for his Lord, yet showed no restraint:
Is God worshipped with the toil of people
أَيُعبَدُis worshipped? اللَهُGod بِسَومِby subjecting الوَرىhumankind
ماwhat لاnot يُسامُis made to endure العَيرُthe donkey فيon المِقوَدِthe lead
Is God worshipped by inflicting on humankind
When the camel's litter cannot pass through the eye of a needle?
what no donkey on a lead is made to bear?
A church like an imposing citadel
كَنيسَةٌa church كَالفَدَنِlike a palace المُعتَليtowering
وَمَسجِدٌand a mosque كَالقَصرِlike the palace مِنof أَصيَدِa proud ruler
A church like a towering palace,
And a mosque like a palace of the hunt
and a mosque like a proud ruler's palace—
But God is needless of this and that
وَاللَهُand God عَنof هَذاthis وَذاand that فيin غِنىًneedlessness
لَوif only يَعقِلُuses reason الإِنسانُhumankind أَوor يَهتَديfinds guidance
yet God has no need of this or that,
If man understands or is guided
if only humankind would reason or find guidance.
The conqueror came with a band
قَدindeed جاءَهاcame to it الفاتِحُthe Conqueror فيwith عُصبَةٍa band
The Conqueror came to it with a band
Of kneeling, bowing lions
of lions, bowing and prostrating.
They battered its structure like
رَمىhurled بِهِمwith them بُنيانَهاits edifice مِثلَماjust as
يَصطَدِمُcollides الجَلمَدُthe boulder بِالجَلمَدِwith the boulder
He hurled them against its edifice, just as
Two rocks colliding
one boulder crashes against another.
They glorified God in it, and the enemies prayed
فَكَبَّرواthen they proclaimed God's greatness فيهاwithin it وَصَلّىand prayed العِداthe enemies
وَاِختَلَطَand mingled المَشهَدُthe scene بِالمَشهَدِwith the scene
Then they cried 'God is greatest' within it, and their foes prayed,
And the spectacle mingled with the spectacle
and one scene mingled with the other.
The Romans did not hesitate to ransom it
وَماand did not تَوانىfalter الرومُthe Romans يَفدونَهاsacrifice themselves for it
وَالسَيفُand the sword فيupon المُفدِيِّthe redeemed وَالمُفتَديand the redeemer
And the Romans did not falter in sacrificing themselves for it,
While the sword was upon the ransomer and the ransomed
while the sword struck redeemed and redeemer alike.
But their Caesar disappointed them
فَخانَهاthen betrayed it مِنof قَيصَرٍa Caesar سَعدُهُhis good fortune
وَأُيِّدَتand it was upheld بِالقَيصَرِby the Caesar الأَسعَدِmore fortunate
Then one Caesar's good fortune betrayed it,
While the more fortunate Caesar supported it
and it was upheld by the more fortunate Caesar—
With a conqueror who sheathed his sword
بِفاتِحٍby a conqueror غازٍa warrior عَفيفِchaste القَناthe spears
لاnot يَحمِلُbears الحِقدَrancor وَلاand not يَعتَديtransgresses
a conqueror, a warrior, with chaste spears,
Who bore no malice or transgressed
who bears no rancor and does not transgress.
Who gave amnesty to those who surrendered
أَجارَgave protection مَنwhoever أَلقىsurrendered مَقاليدَهُhis keys
مِنهُمamong them وَأَصفىand granted pure الأَمنَsafety لِلمُرتَديto the one clothed in it
He sheltered whoever surrendered his keys
And secured safety for the defectors
among them, and gave unclouded safety to those clothed in it.
He turned away from the ornaments
وَنابَand took the place عَمّاof what كانَhad been مِنof زُخرُفٍornament
جَلالَةُthe majesty المَعبودِof the Worshipped One فيin المَعبَدِthe sanctuary
And in place of the former ornament stood
The majesty of the Worshipped in His temple
the Worshipped One's majesty within the sanctuary.
So what a vengeance between us after him
فَياso, alas لِثَأرٍfor a vendetta بَينَناbetween us بَعدَهُafter him
أَقامَlingered لَمdid not يَقرُبdraw near وَلَمand did not يَبعُدِrecede
Ah, the vendetta between us after him:
He established, neither coming close nor going far
it lingered, neither drawing near nor receding!
Remaining like the vengeance of Jerusalem before him
باقٍenduring كَثَأرِlike the vendetta for القُدسِJerusalem مِنfrom قَبلِهِbefore him
لاnot نَنتَهيwe finish مِنهُwith it وَلاand not يَبتَديbegins
It endures like the vendetta for Jerusalem before him:
We never end it nor does it begin
we never reach its end, nor does it begin.
So do not be fooled by the calm water
فَلاso do not يَغُرَّنكَdeceive you سُكونُthe stillness المَلاof the multitude
فَالشَرُّfor evil حَولَaround الصارِمِthe sharp sword المُغمَدِsheathed
So do not let the multitude's stillness deceive you:
For evil encircles the sheathed, drawn sword
for evil lurks around the sheathed sword.
The Romans will not abandon their worship
لَنwill never يَترُكَabandon الرومُthe Romans عِباداتِهِمtheir rites
أَوor يَنزِلَstep down التُركُthe Turks عَنِfrom السُؤدَدِsupremacy
The Romans will never abandon their rites,
Nor will the Turks descend from the highlands
nor will the Turks relinquish their supremacy.
This, for them, is a house upon their house
هَذاthis لَهُمfor them بَيتٌa house عَلىupon بَيتِهِمtheir house
ماhow أَشبَهَsimilar المَسجِدَthe mosque بِالمَسجِدِto the mosque
This is for them a house upon their house;
How similar the mosque is to the mosque!
how like one mosque is to another!
If they come back for its keys
فَإِنand if يُعادواthey become enemies فيover مَفاتيحِهِits keys
فَياthen alas لِيَومٍfor a day لِلوَرىfor humankind أَسوَدِblack
And if they feud over its keys,
What a black day it will be for all people!
then what a black day for humankind!
On it the infant will grow gray in his cradle
يَشيبُturns gray فيهِon it الطِفلُthe child فيin مَهدِهِhis cradle
وَيُزعَجُand is shaken المَيتُthe dead one مِنَfrom الَمرقَدِthe resting place
On it a child turns gray in his cradle,
And the dead will be disturbed from their graves
and the dead are shaken from their resting place.
So oh God, be for us in our past
فَكُنso be لَناwith us اللَهُمَّO God فيin أَمسِناour yesterday
وَكُنand be لَناwith us اليَومَtoday وَكُنand be فيin غَدِtomorrow
So be with us, O God, in our yesterday,
And be for us today and be for us tomorrow
and be with us today, and be with us tomorrow.
If not for preceding misguidance, the people
لَولاbut for ضَلالٌa delusion سابِقٌprior لَمwould not يَقُمhave risen
مِنfor أَجلِكَYour sake الخَلقُhumankind وَلَمand would not يَقعُدِhave sat down
But for a prior delusion, there would have been no rising
Would not have stood up or sat down
by humankind for Your sake, nor any sitting down.
So every evil or harm between them
فَكُلُّso every شَرٍّevil بَينَهُمbetween them أَوor أَذىharm
أَنتَYou بَراءٌare innocent مِنهُof it طُهرُpure اليَدِof hand
So every evil between them, or harm—
You are innocent of it, Most Pure of Hands
You are innocent of it, pure of hand.
