I am jealous of the southern breeze

upon your face, O my beloved.

And I envy the sun in its morning radiance,

and I envy the sun at sunset.

And I envy the birds when they sing

on the tips of their tender bough.

For you may see in them both a beauty

that delights your eyes, O my beloved.

Oh, would that I were a wondrous sight,

on which you would linger with a watcher's gaze.

And would that I were a delightful bird,

singing the melodies of a nightingale.

I would keep pouring for you, from my song,

the choicest wine of the soul and hearts.

And that is because I see you gazing

at the sun's splendor at sunset,

and you adore the birds when they sing

    on the tips of their tender bough;

and because, out of my heart's ardor

and the intensity of longing and flame,

I am jealous of the southern breeze

upon your face, O my beloved.

I am jealous of the southern breeze

upon your face, O my beloved.

And I envy the flowers when they sway

on the brink of a playful brook.

And I envy the river as it flows

over the fertile carpet of fruit.

For you may see in them both a beauty

that delights your eyes, O my beloved.

Oh, would that I were a flower that drank

with the dew the beloved's kiss.

And would that I were a brook that glided gently

    between flowers and fragrance.

And that is because I see you gazing

at the flowers on their tender branch,

and you adore the river as it flows,

    echoing the melody and rhythms;

and because, out of my heart's ardor

and the intensity of longing and flame,

I am jealous of the southern breeze

upon your face, O my beloved.

Oh, would that we were two birds at play

in the garden, amid its lush trees.

And would that we were two flowers, swaying

on the brink of a playful brook.

The lavender would bend me toward you

when it wafted at the hour of sunset.

For indeed, out of my heart's ardor

and the intensity of longing and flame,

I am jealous of the southern breeze

upon your face, O my beloved.
