عِتاباًreproach كَأَيّامِlike the days of الحَياةِlife أَعُدُّهُI count it
عِتاباً كَأَيّامِ الحَياةِ أَعُدُّهُ
لِأَلقىso that I may meet بِهِwith it بَدرَthe full moon السَماءِof heaven إِذاwhen حَضَرhe appears
لِأَلقى بِهِ بَدرَ السَماءِ إِذا حَضَر
I count up reproaches as numerous as the days of life,
I count reproach as the days of life itself
To meet heaven’s full moon with them when he appears.
So I may cast it at the full moon when it rises
فَإِنbut if أَخَذَتtakes in عَينيmy eye مَحاسِنَthe beauties وَجهِهِof his face
فَإِن أَخَذَت عَيني مَحاسِنَ وَجهِهِ
دُهشتُI am stunned لِماby what أَلقىI encounter فَيملكُنيand so masters me الحَصَرspeechlessness
دُهشتُ لِما أَلقى فَيملكُني الحَصَر
But if my eye takes in the beauties of his face,
For if the beauty of its face takes my eyes
I am stunned by what I behold, and speechlessness takes hold of me.
I am confounded by what I encounter and am left speechless
