حافظاً في الأنام مثل فؤادي
Such is my love; do you see for my love
a guardian among humankind like my heart?

for his affection, he gave me the opposite of my desire.

So it is as though everyone has become so-and-so,
and so-and-so is the very one who bears me enmity.

If his coldness toward us lasts a little longer,
then await the physicians and the sickbed visitors.

our livers poured forth night showers and morning rain.

فانبرى من جفاك عرض النِّجادِ
Your affection was a spear's length in my eyes;
then your coldness pared it to a sword-belt's breadth.

It found the heart empty and took possession of it,
at ease, having lain in wait.

The slanderers' swords did their work upon us;
how strange—they went forth though they were not sharp!
