    Misfortune's hands descended, exacting reproach,

though reconciliation is due to one who loves.

For what reason, O son of the noblest stock,

am I driven from sweet, limpid water without a drink,

and drink the bitter sap of tears, whose brine rises,

because you are far away, while enemies reach sweet water?

Ah, would that I knew—wishes are but solace,

and the garden of hopes tells you of a soaking downpour—

when I shall find succor at the watering place of favor,

and exchange scant affection for an outpouring!

    And I used to come, time after time, to offer greetings;

so why have I grown content to visit only at intervals?

Had I deliberately committed an offense,

your impulse to revile me would have been no surprise.

    But I—God knows best—would never

sever love's bonds as one cuts limbs apart.

Nor did I stir up the War of al-Fijar, nor obey

Musaylima when he sought the woman at home behind veils.

Nor did I believe that the caliphate was a hasty affair

in Abu Bakr's time, nor was that ever my way.

Nor did I accuse the Faruq of justice behind his back

of lying, when the fine she-camel was asked of him.

Nor was I a confidant to the Kharijites when they plotted

to kill Uthman with the stroke of a grooved blade.

Nor was I an ally to Ibn Muljam when he attacked

to wage war on Ali—disgrace upon the one who wages war!

Nor, to kill Husayn, did I draw

my sword, or to have him barred from drinking.

Nor did I devise innovations; it is cause enough for you

if a man's honor has a chipped edge.

And suppose I had committed all of that—

then enough of rejection for me, O my hope—enough!
