May God curse my hours and multiply my patience

as they pass like clouds bearing rain.

The days wage war on me, until it is as though

they demand blood vengeance from me for everyone who has died.

    I counted my brief hours and noted their sweetness;

so the best were the hours of my life that passed in dreams.

Whenever I set about counting them to know their ease,

I lose my life, and the outcome is hardship.

Whenever you count as life only what was untroubled,

you find a man who has lived a lifetime without a life.

And here I am, within the folds of the nights, counting

its stars, where no reckoner knows the count.

It is as though, in my distress, I ride throughout the night

on a far-reaching celestial sphere that journeys forever.

I set out earnestly, ascending, my resolve directed

toward the Tablet, to read upon it the surah of Ease.

And I learn it by heart from a brow whose light I glimpsed,

despite its distance, the equal of the stars and the full moon.
