قالتْ علامَ يحِنُّ قلبُكَ للتُّرابْ

قالتْ علامَ يحِنُّ قلبُكَ للتُّرابْ

وطموحُ غيركِ فوقَ أبراجِ السحابْ

وطموحُ غيركِ فوقَ أبراجِ السحابْ

She said, "Why does your heart yearn for the earth,

She said, "Why does your heart yearn for dust?

while others' ambition is above the towers of the clouds?

While others' ambitions are above the clouds' lofts.

حزموا حقائبَهمْ منًى وعزيمةً

حزموا حقائبَهمْ منًى وعزيمةً

فعَلامَ تقنَعُ بالسفوحِ وبالهضابْ

فعَلامَ تقنَعُ بالسفوحِ وبالهضابْ

They packed their bags with hopes and resolve;

They packed their bags with purpose and resolve,

so why are you content with the slopes and the plateaus?"

So why do you settle for the slopes and plateaus?"

فأجبتها: سودُ النفوسِ تجاوزتْ

فأجبتها: سودُ النفوسِ تجاوزتْ

في سعيها حدَّ السلامةِ والصَّوابْ

في سعيها حدَّ السلامةِ والصَّوابْ

So I answered her: "Dark souls have overstepped,

I answered her: "The blackness of souls has exceeded

in their striving, the bounds of safety and what is right;

In its quest, the limits of propriety and rectitude.

وتمخَّضتْ رغباتُها عن فتنةٍ

وتمخَّضتْ رغباتُها عن فتنةٍ

عمْياءَ تجحدُ طهرَ والدِها الترابْ

عمْياءَ تجحدُ طهرَ والدِها الترابْ

and their desires have given birth to strife—

And their desires begot sedition

blind, denying the purity of its father, the earth."

A blind one that denies the purity of its homeland's soil."
