قالتshe said أتُنْكِرُdo you deny? فيin شَيْخوخَتيmy old age حَدَبيmy tender care
عليكَfor you فيin زمنِthe time of الإعسارِfinancial hardship والنَّصَبand toil؟
She said, “In my old age, do you deny my tender care
She said, "Do you deny in my old age the favor
for you in times of poverty and toil?
I did for you in days of poverty and hardship?
رضَعْتَyou suckled ماءَthe water of حياتيmy life هانئاًcontented فَرِحاًjoyful
وماand not سقيتُكَI gave you to drink غَيْرَother than العِلْمِknowledge والأدَبِand good manners
You suckled the water of my life, content and joyful,
You drank freely of the water of my life, happy and delighted,
and I gave you nothing to drink but knowledge and good manners.
And I gave you nothing but knowledge and good breeding.
فكيفَso how تأنَفُyou disdain كِبْراًout of pride عنfrom مُقابلتيmeeting me
إذْnow that صرْتَyou have become فيamong النَّاسِpeople ذاpossessing مالِwealth وذاand possessing نشَبِproperty
So how can you scorn to meet me out of pride,
How can you disdain to visit me now
now that, among people, you have become a man of wealth and property?
When you’ve become a man of wealth and standing?
أبيتُI spend the night أقْرَعُI knock at بابَthe door of العَطْفِcompassion شاكيةًlamenting
أُزْجيI send إليكَto you رجاءاتيmy pleas ولمْand did not تُجِبِyou answer
I spend the night knocking at compassion’s door, lamenting,
I knocked at your door, begging for kindness,
sending you my pleas, but you have not answered.”
Voicing my hopes, but you did not answer."
