قالت: أرى بحرَ الضغائن مُزبداً

أمواجُهُ سكرى بأفواه العدا

She said: I see the sea of rancor foaming,

She said: I see the sea of grudges foaming,

Its waves drunken in the mouths of foes.

Its waves drunk with the mouths of enemies.

قلت: اطمئني لم يَعِشْ في أرضنا

قلت: اطمئني لم يَعِشْ في أرضنا

فَرعون رمزاً أو يعوقُ مسوَّدا

فَرعون رمزاً أو يعوقُ مسوَّدا

I said: Be reassured; never has there lived in our land

I said: Be reassured, no Pharaoh lived in our land

Pharaoh as a symbol, or Ya‘uq as a master.

As a symbol or sooty Jacob.

مرفوعةٌ فوق الكواكب هامُنا

مرفوعةٌ فوق الكواكب هامُنا

لم تنحنِ ذلاَّ ولم تبسُطْ يدا

لم تنحنِ ذلاَّ ولم تبسُطْ يدا

Our heads are held high above the stars;

Our ambitions are raised above the stars,

They have not bowed in humiliation, nor held out a hand.

They did not bow down humiliated, nor extend a hand.

إن أُهْرِقتْ الفداء دماؤنا

إن أُهْرِقتْ الفداء دماؤنا

أسمى شهادة مولدٍ يومُ الفدا

أسمى شهادة مولدٍ يومُ الفدا

If our blood is shed in sacrifice,

If our blood is shed in sacrifice,

The noblest birth certificate is the day of sacrifice.

It is the highest testimony of a day of redemption.
