The path of loving you is the bond of my faith and my creed.

You are my heart's wishes, my petition, and my desire.

You have clouded my clear draught with your distance.

I hoped for a dream-phantom to visit me,

Of a proud one who sees my abasement before him and draws away.

A fickle one banished sleep from me with his delays,

And with the injustice of his accusations and his prolonged weariness.

Ever delaying, he would not grant even the phantom of his image.

I hoped to rise through the sweetness of union with him.

Why, then, does my mind sink through estrangement?

A beloved captured me, possessing my heart and gaze.

He mirrored the gleams in the eyes of gazelle fawns.

When he appeared to me, my mind fell into confusion.

I was pierced by an arrow from languid eyes.

They kindle fire in my breast and deal a blow to the crown of my head.

A passion lodged in my lifeblood has been enough for me.

It coursed through my heart and breast along my path.

So my reproacher could not stand against my argument.

The sea of longings overflowed, and I remained in my deep waters,

Circling there, swimming as ducks swim.

How can the devotee of your love have his burning thirst soothed?

One sickened by your coldness—how can that ailing one recover?

When I saw that patience's path was barred,

My eye's tears surged, then their channel overflowed,

Like Noah's flood, whose shore cannot be reached.

I gave him my soul and sent my body after it.

And estrangement has weakened the bone of my endurance.

And sorrow has ravaged my tormented heart.

My physician pitied my wasting away for love of one

Who assails me alone among all people with prolonged abandonment.

Love for him dwells within my heart.

We renew the passion within me, though that love is longstanding.

My heart finds no consolation from anyone but him.

No defeat has daunted the vanguard of my passion.

Love has a company no other company can equal.

He prolonged abandonment, contrary to his habit.

And the nights of union are no longer repeated.

Since they left me, my anguish has increased.

Ruins stood empty and desolate after their masters departed.

They remain in my heart, whether they draw near or stay far away.

Relentless separation has indeed made our enemies gloat over us.

And parting has left my unity scattered.

And if I find no rescuer from separation's hand,

Through the long nights I lay sleepless,

Longing for them; no pledge between us, then, held firm.

The dwelling of the one I love has vanished, and the homeland is desolate,

Bereft of family, loved ones, neighbors, and companions.

I call out, my heart exhausted by sorrow:

My nature refused to turn away from loving those

Who made me drink from abandonment's cup what al-raṭṭ (unclear) spat out.

They shot me with abandonment's arrow, and I longed all the more

For them, though they honored neither pledge nor companionship.

O you who made me drink a draught of estrangement,

I have turned away from passion's path out of love

For a pearl in a necklace, whose equal no necklace strand ever held.

A prophet who guided us to righteousness and its paths,

Beloved of the All-Merciful, the seal of His messengers.

And He created the worlds only for his sake.

I rejoiced in what I was inspired to recall of his excellence.

Misery has left us, and wrath has been lifted.

Foremost, though the prophets came before him.

You will see them tomorrow at the Gathering, hoping for his favor.

He has a character whose like has never been created.

The factions of the people of polytheism submitted to him.

And their necks were humbled, so stretching finished them.

Compassionate toward the offender, he gives generously of his forbearance.

His qualities tell you of the excellence of his knowledge.

Powerful over his enemies, he strikes with his resolve (reading uncertain).

Their rising fortunes are subdued beneath his rule.

They have no command, nor a foot that can advance.

The Lord has indeed favored us with the noblest messenger,

A prophet who came to us with the revealed Book.

Through praising him, I reached the sweetest watering place.

My tongue is unfettered in praise; yet how can I do justice

To him, when neither word nor writing has encompassed him?

Through him the people of cities and villages became safe.

The Criterion has told of all that happened.

A discourse that came with truth, never fabricated.

Vast in meaning, towering in glory and lofty heights,

He has a palm whose habit is to open in generosity.

Riders make pilgrimage to him from every direction.

Without him, we would not have known prostration toward a direction of prayer.

Through him we enjoy a pleasant life and delight.

A light rising in the nights, he left no night of doubt.

His sayings are justice, and his balance is equity.

The angels thronged around him, all together, and encircled him.

They turned their eyes toward him, then fixed their gaze.

They witnessed the honor shown him and gazed intently.

He ascended the layers of the heavens, and they shone.

Every height falls below his exalted ranks.

Through him we were brought from error to guidance.

We attained honor and triumphed over our enemies.

And we are all safe from destruction.

An embroidered ornament on existence's sleeve; it has become

Through him like a bride adorned by crown and earring.

He called us, and we answered him, swiftly heeding his call.

Through him we gained prestige, pride, and protection.

And in our faith you feared neither error nor innovation.

Through him we rose in honor, standing, and exaltation.

Through him we gained impregnable prestige; through him we wield power.
