وسمر العوالي والرقاق القواضب

Eminence is sought with lean thoroughbred steeds,

The students of glory with liberation are adorned,

And brown lances and slender, cleaving swords.

And the evening of heights and delicate tents,

ولا يبلغ الآمال إلا مدرب

ولا يبلغ الآمال إلا مدرب

يرضى ضربه في الأرض ضربة لازب

يرضى ضربه في الأرض ضربة لازب

And none attains his hopes save a seasoned man,

And hopes are only attained by one who is trained,

Who accepts his travels through the land as an inescapable duty.

Who is content with his blows on earth however slight,

ولا يدرك العلياء من كان آملاً

ولا يدرك العلياء من كان آملاً

بلوغ مناه دون قطع السباسب

بلوغ مناه دون قطع السباسب

Nor does he reach the heights who hopes

And the most high is not reached by one who is hopeful,

To attain his wishes without crossing the desert plains.

Of attaining his goal without cutting the tent ropes,

وليس ينال العز من كان يتبغي

وليس ينال العز من كان يتبغي

حصول الأماني بالظنون الكواذب

حصول الأماني بالظنون الكواذب

Nor does he gain glory who seeks

And honor is not attained by one who desires,

The fulfillment of wishes through false conjectures.

To fulfill his wishes through false assumptions,

ولا يمتطي ظهر المعالي سوى امرءٍ

ولا يمتطي ظهر المعالي سوى امرءٍ

علا من مطايا الحزم أرفع غارب

علا من مطايا الحزم أرفع غارب

Nor does anyone mount the back of eminence save a man

And none mounts the back of glory, but a man,

Who has climbed the highest withers among the mounts of resolve.

Who rose above the saddles of resolve, loftiest of ascents,

ولا يرتقي أوج العلى غير ماجد

ولا يرتقي أوج العلى غير ماجد

حميدٌ خلال في الرعائب راعب

حميدٌ خلال في الرعائب راعب

Nor does anyone ascend to glory's zenith save a noble man,

And none climbs to the summit of the heights, except the glorious,

Praiseworthy in character, striking terror amid horrors.

Praiseworthy, expert in frightful adventures, brave.
