للَّه أي حشاً يبوخ ضرامها

أم أي قلبٍ عنهم يوماً سلا

By God, what breast's blaze could die down?

O Lord, what beast roars, its fangs bare,

Or what heart has ever ceased to grieve for them?

Or what heart from them a day turns away.

أتقر منا العين كلا بعد من

أتقر منا العين كلا بعد من

قد كان قرة عين أحمد في الملا

قد كان قرة عين أحمد في الملا

Can our eyes find comfort? No, not after him

Can the eye be sated after those who

Who was indeed the delight of Ahmad's eyes among the throng.

Were the delight of Ahmed’s eye in the throng

أم أينا من بعد مهجة قلبه

أم أينا من بعد مهجة قلبه

لم يصم مهجة قلبه كرب البلا

لم يصم مهجة قلبه كرب البلا

Or which of us, after the loss of his heart's lifeblood,

Or where are we after his core is stilled

Has not had his own heart's lifeblood pierced by affliction's anguish?

Not once was his core stilled by distress

أم أي وردٍ بعده يهنا وقد

أم أي وردٍ بعده يهنا وقد

منع الورود وكان غيثاً مسبلا

منع الورود وكان غيثاً مسبلا

Or what draught can be sweet after him, when

Or what blossoms still after him, when

He was denied water, though he was rain pouring down?

The blossoms were forbidden, a pouring rain

أم كيف نهج بعد من لم يهجعوا

أم كيف نهج بعد من لم يهجعوا

من ليلهم إلا القليل تململا

من ليلهم إلا القليل تململا

Or how can we [sleep] after those who did not slumber

Or how can we sleep after those who

Through their night save a little, tossing restlessly?

Only dozed lightly through the night

أم كيف نبخل بالدموع لفقد من

أم كيف نبخل بالدموع لفقد من

غمروا بجودهم الأنام تطولا

غمروا بجودهم الأنام تطولا

Or how can we withhold tears for the loss of those

Or how can we be sparing with tears for one

Who flooded humankind with their bounty, graciously bestowing favors?

Who with generosity flooded people seeking
