The lord of glory has died; let the homeland mourn him,

And learning, virtue, letters, and benefactions.

He was the one through whom high glory shone,

For he was Hasan—the eye and the ear.

Through him, learning attained its finest gain,

A gain none who traveled or journeyed away had attained before.

It wished through him to spread the sciences to those

Whose rise it hoped for, but time betrayed it.

Then death took him unawares, as it recited:

“The winds come bearing what the ships do not desire.”

And now the land's water sources no longer run clear,

Nor, after him, does the homeland visit springs.

And rightly may the eye weep blood for him,

For he has gone far away, and grave and shroud are beyond reach.

It was fitting for us to be patient while he was far

From home, with neither family nor shelter.

And whom shall we console, when all people lament him?

And if there is consolation, then from us come soul and body.

All hearts have said, recording the date:

“Die, O Safa, for I have no Hasan in Egypt.”
