نَبىProphet الهُدىguidance أَرجوI hope for شَفاعتكyour intercession الَّتيwhich
نَبى الهُدى أَرجو شَفاعتك الَّتي
لَكَfor you اللَهُGod بَعدَafter الرُسلthe messengers أَجلىmade manifest نَوالَهاits bestowal
لَكَ اللَهُ بَعدَ الرُسل أَجلى نَوالَها
O Prophet of guidance, I seek your intercession, whose
O Prophet of guidance, I hope for your intercession, whose
grant to you God made manifest after the messengers.
bestowal God made manifest for you after the messengers.
وَفيand amid الهَولthe terror جاءَتكَcame to you الخَلائقthe creatures كُلَهاall of them
وَفي الهَول جاءَتكَ الخَلائق كُلَها
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle تَوالىfollowed in succession الخَطبthe calamity قُلتyou said أَنالَهاI am equal to it
إِذا ما تَوالى الخَطب قُلت أَنالَها
Amid the terror, all created beings will come to you;
And amid the terror, all creatures came to you;
when calamities follow one upon another, you say, “I shall attain it.”
when calamity followed calamity, you said, 'I am equal to it.'
وَقَدand indeed جَدَgrew intense بيupon me وَجديmy longing فَجئتكso I came to you قاصِداًseeking
وَقَد جَدَ بي وَجدي فَجئتك قاصِداً
لِتَشكوso that it might complain نَفسيmy soul مادَهاهاwhat befell it وَهالَهاand terrified it
لِتَشكو نَفسي مادَهاها وَهالَها
My ardent longing has grown intense, so I have come to you, intent,
And my longing pressed hard upon me, so I came seeking you,
that my soul may lament what has stricken and appalled it.
so that my soul might complain of what befell and terrified it.
وَهَأناand here I am راجhoping مِنكَfrom you حسنgood هِدايةguidance
وَهَأنا راج مِنكَ حسن هِداية
وَأَشفَقتand I grew fearful مِنof ذَنبيmy sin عَسيperhaps أَنthat أَنالَهاI attain it
وَأَشفَقت مِن ذَنبي عَسي أَن أَنالَها
And here I am, hoping from you for gracious guidance,
And here I am, hoping for good guidance from you,
fearful because of my sin—perhaps I may attain it.
and I have grown fearful of my sin; may I attain it.
