    Twenty years? Father—twenty? Alas!

Have I lived after you, nurturing care and sorrow?

Twenty—a lifetime whose end I have not reached.

Is it filial devotion that you should depart and I follow behind?

Twenty years, Father, I traversed their exile,

nurturing griefs with a heart that has never ceased to ail.

Twenty years—and arduous exile weighs me down,

as though it were a chain in which life has trudged fettered.

I bade your spirit farewell as a lamp by which I illuminate

a lifetime gone by; while my own life wrapped itself in darkness.

I tell you what my exile has done to me, Father:

as though I had neither family nor allies.

There would be no excuse if the tears of both my eyes ran dry.

Was I summoned? No, Father. O grief, has he said, “Enough”?

It delights the eye to grow accustomed to it at dawn—

a phantom, even if it floated upon a sea of tears.

What can I tell of your memory, Father?

Did you hear my voice? Did you not hear it trembling?

I stammered when there swept swiftly around me

a phantom for whom the heart had bled with longing.

Here you leaned; here you spoke; he was here—

your counsel like a spring from which the passerby drew.

    Return, Father, where companionship still

nurtures silence for you—rather, kindles ardor for you.

Your echo—this is your echo; the door remembers it,

until even its creaking bled across the distance like an “Ah.”

And there is a resting place where images swayed,

thick-lashed, sprinkling drops upon our eyelids.

    فالبخلُ نصلٌ لئيمٌ يجرحُ الشَّرفا

    He says, “Take!”—for giving was his constant habit;

miserliness is an ignoble blade that wounds honor.

Generosity has a door without a lock for

a key of hardship to work at, should it approach one day.

A cameleer, keen with longing, urges a thousand caravans

toward a host who cast ample shade for them.

He grows so tender that you can see behind his breastbone

the whiteness that has grown pure like limpid water.

    وكم بإبرته فتق الخلاف رفا

    A humility that was no garment he might take off;

how many rents of discord his needle mended!

From the echoes of his tone there almost slips

a moth of love yearning toward the warmth of reunion.

The voice of his wisdom still frequents my mind

and sleeps like an infant upon the shoulders of counsel,

until, when morning called me, I laid before it

baskets of what the mind had plucked from his garden.

Whenever I stumbled, I imagined he said, “Up again!”

Whenever I bent, he said, “Be an alif.”

Whenever I felt apprehension at a doubt with which I was afflicted,

he cast certainty to me, and the horizon opened.
