Speak again, O orator of the free cause that
Repeat, O orator of the free cause that
brought solace to free minds and hearts.
brought relief to free minds and hearts.

دعوتyou called إليهto it أنthat أكونI should be مجيباone who answers
I answer you after a while of silence, and just as
I answer you after a spell of silence, and in keeping with
you called upon me to do, I shall make reply.
your call for me to be one who responds.
وقفتand I stood وماand not أدريI know أعدُّI count حوادثاًevents
تدورunfold أماميbefore me أمor أعدI count ذنوباsins
I stood, unsure whether I was counting events
And I stood, not knowing: was I counting events
turning before my eyes, or counting sins.
unfolding before me, or counting sins?

I bore on behalf of my people a share of sorrow,
I bore, on behalf of my people, a share of sorrow,
yet sought no share of the reward for striving.
and hoped for no share of the struggle's reward.

I peered deep into the unseen decrees, that perhaps
And I delved into the mysteries of fate, hoping I might
I might see deliverance near for the two nations.
see relief for the two nations close at hand.

The fertility of its soil cannot avail a nation
Nor can the fertility of its land enrich a nation
unless the character of its men is fertile too.
if the character of its men is not fertile.

My people—soldiers and leaders—are divided today;
My people have quarreled today, soldiers and leaders,
I have seen only plunderer and plundered.
so I saw only a plunderer and one plundered.

Is it party principles I see, or interests
Do I see party principles, or interests
following among them in every kind and form?
following one another among them in varied kinds and forms?

The wars of the world have ended, yet still
The world's wars have ended, yet I still
I see wars among the sons of the land.
see wars among the sons of the land.

Their foe enlisted my people against my people,
Their adversary sought my people's aid against my people,
then struck in the north and grew overbearing in the south.
so he charged northward and extended his sway southward.

Who will carry the matter through for them decisively,
Who, then, can give them a resolute enforcer of orders,
if they heed neither critic nor one who calls them to account—
if they will not obey a critic and reckoner,

who will bring them back, after estrangement and separation,
who reunites them, after estrangement and separation,
as comrades, as a sick man finds a physician?
as companions, as a sick man meets a physician?

Then Egypt’s destiny will be assured,
Then Egypt's destiny is assured,
as I, poet and orator, have wished it for her.
as I, a poet and orator, have wished for her.
