على أي شيءٍ يرجعُ الخلفُ بينكم

وما سار إلا ليلةً بكم الصلحُ

Over what matter does discord return among you,

when peace has journeyed with you for only a night?

ويذهب بالنجوى المساءُ وبالرضى

ويذهب بالنجوى المساءُ وبالرضى

ويطلعُ بالشحناءِ والغضبِ الصبحُ

ويطلعُ بالشحناءِ والغضبِ الصبحُ

And evening departs with private counsel and contentment,

And dawn rises with rancor and anger.

أَعَودٌ إلى جرحٍ لكم توسعونه

أَعَودٌ إلى جرحٍ لكم توسعونه

ليشغلكم من بعد ما التأم الجرحُ

ليشغلكم من بعد ما التأم الجرحُ

Is this a return to a wound of yours, which you widen,

to distract you after the wound has healed?

وأين المواثيق التي جِئتُمُ بها

وأين المواثيق التي جِئتُمُ بها

إذا لم يكن فيها التجاوزُ والصفحُ

إذا لم يكن فيها التجاوزُ والصفحُ

And where are the covenants you brought,

if they contain neither forbearance nor forgiveness?

وهل علم الوادي بما تصنعونه

وهل علم الوادي بما تصنعونه

وما يثبت الجبّار منه وما يمحو

وما يثبت الجبّار منه وما يمحو

And has the valley learned of what you are doing,

And what of it the tyrant establishes, and what he erases?

وما كان موكولاً له الركبُ والمدى

وما كان موكولاً له الركبُ والمدى

وما كان متروكاً له المنعُ والمنحُ

وما كان متروكاً له المنعُ والمنحُ

Yet the caravan and its destination were not entrusted to him,

Nor were withholding and granting left to him.

وما لِغَريمٍ دافعٌ غيرُ شملِكُمْ

وما لِغَريمٍ دافعٌ غيرُ شملِكُمْ

إذا فاتكم في حربه السيفُ والرمحُ

إذا فاتكم في حربه السيفُ والرمحُ

And nothing repels an adversary but your unity,

if sword and spear are beyond your reach in war against him.

وكل وفيٍّ للبلاد وأهلها

وكل وفيٍّ للبلاد وأهلها

جوادٌ بعينيه ومهجته سمحُ

جوادٌ بعينيه ومهجته سمحُ

And everyone loyal to the country and its people

Is generous with his eyes and his lifeblood, open-handed.

دعوا قسمةَ الأسلابِ قبل وقوعِها

دعوا قسمةَ الأسلابِ قبل وقوعِها

فما صحَّ فيها الضربُ والجمعُ والطرحُ

فما صحَّ فيها الضربُ والجمعُ والطرحُ

Stop dividing the spoils before they are won,

For multiplication, addition, and subtraction have not proved sound in it.

لكل فريق رأيُهُ وحسابُهُ

لكل فريق رأيُهُ وحسابُهُ

ولي فيكمُ الكد المبرِّح والكدحُ

ولي فيكمُ الكد المبرِّح والكدحُ

Each faction has its own opinion and reckoning,

And my lot among you is agonizing toil and hard labor.

وإن لم يفد وعظي ونصحيَ عندكم

وإن لم يفد وعظي ونصحيَ عندكم

فحسبكمُ وعظُ الحوادثِ والنصحُ

فحسبكمُ وعظُ الحوادثِ والنصحُ

And if my admonition and counsel are of no use to you,

Then the admonition and counsel of events suffice you.
