O you who blame me for what I sought
for my livelihood and to remedy my lot in life,

ر وأين من يعنيه أمري
I have concerned myself with Egypt’s affairs,
but where is anyone concerned with mine?
الذنبthe fault ذنبthe fault of الغافليthe heedless (first part of الغافلين)

The fault lies with the heedless,
the wealthy; and the excuse is mine.

إني شهيد العهد مط
ويّاًcompletion of مطويّاً (hidden away) بقفرin a wilderness أوor بقصرin a palace
ويّاً بقفر أو بقصر
I am this age’s martyr, hidden away
in a wilderness or in a palace.
إنif كانis فكرthe thought of الحرthe free man جلa bringer (first part of جلّاب)
إن كان فكر الحر جل
لابcompletion of جلّاب (bringer) الهمومsorrows عدمتmay I lose فكريmy thought
لاب الهموم عدمت فكري
If a free man’s thought is a bringer
of sorrows, may I lose my thought!
أوor كانthere is فيin شكوىlamenting الأسىsorrow
أو كان في شكوى الأسى
طربdelight الجهولthe ignorant person سددتI would seal ثغريmy mouth
طرب الجهول سددت ثغري
Or if in lamenting sorrow
the ignorant find delight, I would seal my lips.
الظلمthe injustice أنthat أشقىI suffer بآfor (beginning of بآدابي)
الظلم أن أشقى بآ
دابيmy literary works (completion of بآدابي) وإنand even if خلَّدنthey immortalize ذكريmy memory
دابي وإن خلَّدن ذكري
The injustice is that I suffer for my literary works,
even if they immortalize my memory.
