Is this the germ of the epidemic?

May you cease to be, O enemy of the intestines!

صورك الوهم سلاحاً ماضيا

لا حيواناً رائحاً وغاديا

Imagination pictured you as a keen-edged weapon,

not as a creature coming and going.

وكنت في خواطر الأفكارِ

أروع منك الآن في المنظارِ

In my thoughts you were

more fearsome than you are now under the microscope.

رأى طبيب القوم أن يكبِّرا

جسمك كي نبصره فصغرا

The people's physician decided to magnify

your body so we could see it; then it seemed small.

فهل يراك المرء إلا حَشَرَهْ

فهل يراك المرء إلا حَشَرَهْ

ضعيفة مهانة محتقرَهْ

ضعيفة مهانة محتقرَهْ

Does anyone see you as anything but an insect,

weak, abased, and despised?

فكم أبادَ من دُبَى وداسا

فكم أبادَ من دُبَى وداسا

مثلك لا يخشى لها مراسا

مثلك لا يخشى لها مراسا

How many young locusts has he destroyed and trampled,

like you, fearing no struggle with them?

رَبّاكِ مَنْ رَبَّى وإني خائفُ

رَبّاكِ مَنْ رَبَّى وإني خائفُ

عليه منك وفؤادي واجفُ

عليه منك وفؤادي واجفُ

I fear for whoever nurtured you;

my heart trembles for him because of you.

فلو سقاك أو غذاك حبّا

فلو سقاك أو غذاك حبّا

لم يأمن الإنسان منك حربا

لم يأمن الإنسان منك حربا

Even if he gave you water or fed you lovingly,

humankind would not be safe from your assault.

فكيف وهو طالب فناءكِ

فكيف وهو طالب فناءكِ

ببحثه وبالدواء داءكِ

ببحثه وبالدواء داءكِ

How much more so when he seeks to destroy you

through research, and the illness you cause through medicine?

أرشده اللّه إلى المفيد

أرشده اللّه إلى المفيد

مباركاً في سعيه الحميد

مباركاً في سعيه الحميد

May God guide him to what is useful,

blessing his praiseworthy endeavor.
