I lay sleepless; one like me would lie sleepless if he remembered.

So my heart was nearly torn apart by anguish.

وبت أعاني ليلة غاب نجمها

سوى شرر من جانب الصدر يبرق

سوى شرر من جانب الصدر يبرق

And I spent a night in torment, its star gone,

save sparks flashing from the side of my breast.

أنست به لولا لظى لا أطيقه

بقلبيَ يُذْكيه الهيام فيحرق

بقلبيَ يُذْكيه الهيام فيحرق

I would have found comfort in them, but for a blaze I cannot bear

in my heart—passion fans it, so it scorches.

وأبكي بدمع دافق غير مطفئٍ

وأبكي بدمع دافق غير مطفئٍ

سعيراً ولكني به بت أشرق

سعيراً ولكني به بت أشرق

And I weep with streaming tears that do not quench

a raging blaze; yet I spent the night choking on them.

سهاد أقاسيه فلا الدمع نافع

سهاد أقاسيه فلا الدمع نافع

ولا النجم منظور ولا الليل مشفق

ولا النجم منظور ولا الليل مشفق

I endure sleeplessness; tears are of no use,

nor is the star visible, nor is the night merciful.

ولا النوم ميسور ولا الفجر طالع

ولا النوم ميسور ولا الفجر طالع

ولا الصبر مقدور ولا الفكر مطلق

ولا الصبر مقدور ولا الفكر مطلق

Nor is sleep attainable, nor is dawn rising,

nor is patience within my power, nor is thought unfettered.

ولا أنا إن أشك الهموم بمهتد

ولا أنا إن أشك الهموم بمهتد

إلى سائل عن حالتي يترفق

إلى سائل عن حالتي يترفق

Nor, if I complain of my cares, can I find my way

to someone who kindly asks about my condition.

وما اغتال أمني غير رفقي بموطني

وما اغتال أمني غير رفقي بموطني

وخوفي عليه من نسور تحلق

وخوفي عليه من نسور تحلق

And nothing stole my peace but my tender concern for my homeland

and my fear for it in the face of vultures soaring overhead.

وقومي نيام غافلون ولو مشوا

وقومي نيام غافلون ولو مشوا

على الأرض إن أنذرتهم لا يصدقوا

على الأرض إن أنذرتهم لا يصدقوا

And my people are asleep, heedless, even if they walk

upon the earth; if I warn them, they will not believe.

أفيقوا فقد كان الزمان لسكركم

أفيقوا فقد كان الزمان لسكركم

يتمم فيكم كيده ويحقق

يتمم فيكم كيده ويحقق

Awake! For Time, because of your drunken stupor, has been

completing its plot against you and carrying it out.

أترضون ذلاً ليس يرضى بمثله

أترضون ذلاً ليس يرضى بمثله

سوى مستكن حوله الهول محدق

سوى مستكن حوله الهول محدق

Do you accept humiliation whose like none would accept

save one who cowers, with terror surrounding him?

بني الشرق لولا جهلكم وضلالكم

بني الشرق لولا جهلكم وضلالكم

وضعفكمُ ما دان للغرب مشرق

وضعفكمُ ما دان للغرب مشرق

Sons of the East, but for your ignorance and your waywardness

and your weakness, no eastern land would have submitted to the West.

تعلقتمُ بالمهلكات وإنما

تعلقتمُ بالمهلكات وإنما

يكون بأسباب النجاة التعلق

يكون بأسباب النجاة التعلق

You have clung to things that bring ruin, yet it is only

to the means of deliverance that one ought to cling.

أما لكمُ من صوت مثليَ واعظ

أما لكمُ من صوت مثليَ واعظ

أما لكمُ من زجر مثليَ مقلق

أما لكمُ من زجر مثليَ مقلق

Is there no admonition for you in the voice of one like me?

Is there nothing to unsettle you in the rebuke of one like me?

أخاف عليكم حادثاً متوقعاً

أخاف عليكم حادثاً متوقعاً

يسد عليكم سبْلَكم ويضيق

يسد عليكم سبْلَكم ويضيق

I fear for you a foreseeable calamity

that will block your paths and hem you in.

أعدوا له حصن الدفاع لتحفظوا

أعدوا له حصن الدفاع لتحفظوا

حياتكمُ منه ولا تتفرقوا

حياتكمُ منه ولا تتفرقوا

Prepare a defensive fortress against it, to protect

your lives from it, and do not become divided.
